Wakefield School is an independent, college-preparatory school whose primary goal is to provide a rigorous, liberal arts education. We believe that such an education trains the intellect while fostering self-discipline, independence, creativity, and curiosity. We encourage students at every level to think about, and with the knowledge, they are working on mastering. Finally, we aim to cultivate ethical and robust character through guidance in and out of the classroom committed to training the spirit and the mind. This concept is embodied in the School's motto, Virtus et Sapientia, or "Virtue and Wisdom." The cornerstone of our curriculum is our emphasis on practical and disciplined communication. Every other course of study is predicated on thinking and communicating clearly and is consistent with the balance provided by our focus on the liberal arts. Every student must stretch beyond his or her strengths into other areas. We strive both to nurture talents and to encourage exploration. Courses in fine arts, science, mathematics, history, ancient and modern languages, and computer science are required. The faculty, a community of teachers and learners, links specific academic fields and axes the broadly educated perspective we hope to inspire in each student. Wakefield also values the need for balance and personal development provided by extra-curricular activities. The School supports activities including student government, interscholastic athletics, academic clubs, artistic activities, and service organizations. The opportunity to achieve success in ungraded activities encourages students to explore and develop their interests, take leadership roles, and achieve tremendous success in the academic program. The curriculum and extra-curricular programs of Wakefield School are entrusted to the faculty, Wakefield's most crucial component. Teachers challenge students to develop the fortitude and creativity to solve problems successfully, establish new goals thoughtfully, and gradually become more responsible for their learning and conduct. They provide models of responsible, just, compassionate, inquisitive, and ethical behavior. Choosing where to study is a big decision, and we are all different individuals. Our focus is on teaching and learning, giving all students the best chance to achieve their ambitions regardless of their starting point. It is as simple as that. Today, the College has its base in three major areas and delivers learning in community settings and workplaces around the District. Our College is committed to working in partnership with local schools, employers, and learning providers to transform learning, attainment, achievement, and progression for everyone in the District. The College is home to over 7,000 students of all ages and abilities, studying a broad range of courses, from pre-entry to higher education and professional qualifications. Our students achieve great results in their exams. The 2015/16 academic year saw the overall A Level pass rate reach 97% - the 11th year in a row has exceeded 95% with 14 A Level subjects achieving a 100% pass rate. Students on our Extended Diploma produced another set of excellent results with 19 subjects achieving a 100% pass rate. This year we also celebrated 25 students gaining three distinction stars – the highest results possible. What are students say is important to us, and we ask them their opinion every year. The annual student survey looks at all aspects of our student’s experience, including quality of teaching, resources, and support. Findings from the survey are presented to senior college management and help inform strategic planning. The Governing Body of Wakefield College determines its membership within the restraints clearly set out in the Instrument and Articles of Government. The Governing Body comprises 16 members.
