- Welcome to Viking Primary School, our safe and stimulating learning environment. We live by our vision ‘be the best you can be’ enabling our children to become independent, self-confident, mature, and happy learners, with self-esteem and respect for the needs and rights of others. We aim to provide a firm foundation upon which to move to secondary education. By the time they leave us at age 11, we will expect that your child will have achieved a level of reading, writing, and maths which is the best for their ability. Our core values of effort, teamwork, respect, fun, and positivity pervade the whole curriculum, from Nursery to Year 6. We also aim to ensure that the principle of partnership between the school, parents, and the community is fostered. We look forward to working with you on your child’s successful and happy journey through the school. We aim to create a happy, secure, and purposeful learning environment offering children equal access to the whole curriculum. We aim to develop independent, self-confident, mature, and happy learners, with self-esteem and respect for the needs and rights of others. We aim to provide an engaging and relevant curriculum, enriched by real experiences, where key skills are developed in preparation for lifelong learning. We aim to ensure that all staff receive high-quality professional development and have a shared vision and purpose. We aim to provide a firm foundation upon which to move to secondary education. We teach English lessons daily from years 1 – 6, following the content and objectives of the National Curriculum. We teach the key skills of reading, writing, handwriting, spelling, punctuation, and grammar through an exciting range of genres and interesting books and topics. We plan lessons based on the children’s needs and interests, using a book-based approach and resources from the Collins Treasure House English scheme. Guided reading in years 2 – 6 focuses on the skills of reading and inference, building children’s vocabulary and understanding of reading, and occurs daily. For independent reading, pupils in year groups 2 to 6 have access to class libraries of well-chosen books, which they take home and read for pleasure. The phonics scheme we follow from Nursery to Year 1 is Read, Write Inc. These daily one-hour lessons contain a mixture of reading, writing, and phonics teaching. View full school
