- Tynecastle High School was founded in 1912. It is a co-educational six-year school with 524 students on its roll at present. In January 2010 we moved to a state-of-the-art new school building across the road from the school’s original site. The new building and its wonderful facilities enable us to provide our students with an education for the 21st Century. Tynecastle High School is a six-year comprehensive secondary school that has served west-central Edinburgh with distinction for over 100 years. The school moved to a fantastic new site in January 2010 and has first-class educational facilities. The school is thoroughly rooted in its local communities, with learners drawn from Balgreen, Craiglockhart, Dalry, and Stenhouse Primary Schools. The school roll is currently around 530. We are a culturally diverse school and are proud of the fact that we have almost forty languages spoken by our students and staff. We are proud of the fact that many of our students are the second or third generation of their family to attend Tynecastle. We encourage all of our students to be proud of their school and its long-standing reputation in the community. The school offers a wide range of subjects and successfully presents students for SQA exams at all levels. There is a strong sense of pride in the school demonstrated by students, staff, and parents/carers. The school has, over many years, successfully supported significant numbers of high attaining students into a wide range of courses at Universities across the UK, as well as having a strong record in supporting young people into the world of work. The staff knows their students well and a high priority is set by all staff on pastoral care and on ensuring pupils’ welfare. The atmosphere is welcoming and warm with respectful relationships underpinning purposeful learning. We recognize that central to educational success for our learners is a professionally skilled and enthusiastic staff team. We are committed to excellence in teaching and learning and to warm, mutually respectful relationships with our learners, their parents/carers, and the local community. As your son/daughter progresses through Primary 7, your thoughts will be increasingly turning to the move to secondary in August. In line with the City of Edinburgh policy, it is my view that the best option for young people is to attend their local school, with classmates from primary and the wider community of which they are apart. Our motto is Tynecastle CARES (Challenge, Ambition, Respect, Enjoyment, and Success) and we are proud that visitors soon pick up on this warm and friendly ethos. This is what makes us special. Our staff goes the extra mile to help students. We are also a very innovative school, leading the way in the use of technology to support learning, with all S3 to S6 students now equipped with iPads.
