The University of Trier is one of Rhineland-Palatinate's oldest and – at the same time – youngest universities. The University of Trier was first founded in 1473, but like other German universities located west of the Rhine, it was closed by Napoleon in 1798. Trier, Germany's oldest city, can today call itself a university town again, however. In 1970, a new university was founded in Trier – initially, until 1975, with the University of Kaiserslautern as a twin institution. Since then, Trier has been developing into a major academic center in a region characterized by its proximity to Belgium, France, and Luxembourg. The Seal of Trier University dates from 1473 and shows on the upper side both bishops Ambrosius and Augustinus. The apostle Paulus, often chosen as a teaching apostle by many universities. The inscription underneath the figures says: "S(sigillum) almi studio reverence (is) "= "Seal of the academic studies in Trier". The hatchments on the left and the right side of the inscription show the emblem of the former archbishop Johann II. of Baden and Trier's city arms. There is an inscription called "Treveris ex urbe Deus complete dona Sophie (ae) around the figures on the edge of the seal. "= "In Trier, god completes the gifts of wisdom", a very proud and hopeful dictum. About 7,200 students are enrolled at our three campuses in Trier, Idar-Oberstein, and Birkenfeld, which marks our institution as one of the largest universities of applied sciences in Rhineland-Palatinate. Thanks to our border region located in the Southwest of Germany, we offer ideal conditions and prepare our students not just for careers in Germany but also in Luxemburg, France, or Belgium. Considering this wide range of international employment opportunities on our doorstep, we offer a diverse selection of degree programs in technology, business, law, Design, and computer science. Sustainability and environmental awareness are at the core of the degree programs at the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld, where around 2,200 of our students study. This also encourages intensive and interdisciplinary cooperation between different disciplines there. More than 50 students are enrolled in the Fine Arts degrees of gemstone and jewelry design at our campus in Idar-Oberstein (Bachelors and Masters). The study, teaching, and research lie in the responsibility of seven different faculties. The fields of Business Studies, Computer Science, and Engineering and Technology are located at the campus Schneidershof in Trier. The faculty of Design is located at three campuses: Irminenfreihof and Paulusplatz in Trier and Idar-Oberstein. The Environmental-Campus Birkenfeld is home to Environmental Planning/Environmental Technology and Environmental Business Studies/Environmental Law. The university is governed by its president, who is also the external representative. Two vice presidents support the president. The university consists of decision-making bodies with members who have been elected in free, equal, and secret elections. The student body is represented in the students' parliament (StuPa – student council). The student council elects the general students' Committee (AStA). Currently, approximately 8,000 students from over 70 nations study at one of Trier University of Applied Sciences' three campuses. These are located in Birkenfeld, Idar-Oberstein, and Trier. Our main subject areas include Business Studies, Computer Science, Design, Law, and Technology. We offer bachelor's, Dual bachelor's, and Masters's degrees and courses in continuing education, such as distant learning courses and certificates. Our offices and departments assist prospective students, students, and alumni.
