Our school is a Church in Wales Voluntary Aided Primary School set within the small village of Trelawnyd. Our ethos is centered on the Christian faith and we have close links with members of the Parish Church, St Michael, and All Angels. Our 2015 Inspection report stated that the school’s current performance is good due to the progress pupils make, the skills they develop, and their achievement by the time they leave the school. Inspectors also judged the school as a welcoming community with an inclusive ethos where staff value every child.’ Prospects for improvement at the school were judged to be good because the school has purposeful leadership and leaders are responsive to local and national priorities. Inspectors stated that governors have a sound understanding of the school's strengths and areas for development and that the school works well with a good range of partners to improve standards and wellbeing. The school is set in a beautiful location below Gop hill in Trelawnyd and commands views over the local countryside. The Victorian buildings have been preserved whilst remodeling and a sympathetic extension provides an attractive and practical space for learning. The school has an important place in the local community and has a strong link with the parish church of St Michaels and All Angels. Pupils attend the school from a wide catchment area many parents opt to send their children to Trelawnyd if they wish them to have a church school education. The school is affiliated with the Diocese of St Asaph and the main focus of religious education is Anglican however all classes study other world cultures and religions. Currently, the infant pupils are taught in two separate classes. During the morning session where the main focus is on language, maths, and basic skills. Pupils aged 3 to 5 are taught in the Early years class by Mrs. Palmer and Miss Parsons. Pupils aged 6 and 7 move into years 1 and 2 where they are taught by Miss Hughes. During the afternoon, pupils from 4-7 are taught through pupil-centered topics where knowledge and understanding of the world, creative, physical, and Welsh language activities are introduced. The junior pupils are taught in two separate classes for lower and upper juniors with the 8 and 9-year-olds in years 3 and 4 with Mr. Williams. The upper juniors of 10 and 11-year-olds in years 5 and 6 are taught by Miss Fisher. Pupils are taught mainly in their class groups to allow learning to be focused for the range of their age and ability. The teachers of all classes are very experienced at teaching the particular age range and can plan and set targets for pupils to make maximum progress during their time in that class. Learning is supported and developed by teaching assistants who are trained to support pupils in the age range in which they work. They can help pupils to learn the key skills and develop their knowledge and understanding during ongoing activities.
