  1. As a dedicated infant school, we believe that early years education lays the foundation for life-long learning. Here at Trafalgar Infant School, we are committed to both pupil achievement and pupil development. This means that through the wide experiences that we offer we aim to challenge our children to achieve academically while also developing their confidence, self-esteem, and a positive attitude towards learning. Starting school is an important time for both children and parents and selecting the right school for your child is an important decision. We hope you will find our website informative, and we look forward to welcoming you for a tour of our school. The statutory age for starting school is the term after your child’s 5th birthday. At Trafalgar Infant School all our children have the opportunity to start full time from the beginning of the academic year in which they become 5 years old. We are a three-form entry school which means that we have three classes of up to 30 children in each of the three-year groups. If your child is already attending a local school and you would like your child to transfer to another school for any reason, you should first discuss this with the headteacher of your child’s current school. This is because a child’s education usually benefits most when they have continuity of teaching and learning in the same school. If you still want to move your child, you will need to complete an application form. You should not withdraw your child from their current school until you have secured a place at an alternative school. The school must ensure that all parents understand our responsibility to safeguard the well-being of all pupils and that this responsibility requires us to have a child protection policy and procedures. As part of these procedures, the school can make a direct referral to the statutory child welfare agencies including the Police and/or Social Services without involving the parents if they have concerns about the safety of any child. Mrs. Thompson (Headteacher), Mrs. OptHolt (Deputy Headteacher), and Mrs. Brazier (Inclusion Co-ordinator) are the nominated people for Child Protection. Our inclusion coordinator advises on good practice in line with the latest Government and local guidance and any changes are reflected in our Inclusion, Equalities, and Special Needspolicies and our SEND information report. These are reviewed annually by our Governors. We have an inclusion leaflet for parents and carers. Our Pupil Premium Strategy outlines how we support families who are eligible for the Government’s Pupil Premium Grant. Our Accessibility Plan is reviewed annually by our Governing Body. This enables us to consider any additional actions to increase access to the school and the curriculum by children with disabilities. We use Jolly Phonics. Jolly Phonics is a fun and child-centered approach to teaching literacy through synthetic phonics. With actions for each of the 42 letter sounds, together with songs and videos, the multi-sensory method is very motivating for children. Lessons are carefully planned to follow the National Curriculum objectives. Progress of children’s developing sense of number and calculation strategies is monitored using maths target walls. This ensures that pupils and teachers are aware of the next steps to secure mathematical proficiency. A problem-solving approach enables children to recall and apply their developing maths skills. The PTA has a valuable role in the life of the School. All parents are automatically members of the PTA whilst their children attend Trafalgar Infant School and are welcome to attend any meetings. The PTA meets in the evening at school to allow working parents to become involved with the school and meet other parents. These meetings, which are friendly and informal, allow parents to find out more about what is going on in school, share ideas and issues. These are volunteer parents/carers of children in a particular class, appointed at the beginning of the school year, who offer another line of communication between the school and home. They also have information about PTA activities. Parents can raise issues with the class rep which can then be taken to the half-termly meeting with the Headteacher. Class reps are in the playground on most days and their photos are on display. Class reps meetings are held every month at the beginning of the school day. Parent Governors are elected by parents with children at either of the Trafalgar schools, for a 4-year term. The Staff Governor is elected by the staff of both Trafalgar schools, for a 4-year term. Co-opted Governors are appointed by the governing body for a 4-year term. The LA Governor is nominated by the Local Authority and appointed by the governing body for a 4-year term. Trafalgar Infant School is a community school with a governing body consisting of the Headteacher, Staff and Parent Governors, a Local Authority Governor, and Co-opted Governors. The school Governors have a legal responsibility for the overall management of the school and are actively involved in school life. The Governors form a management committee to support the Headteacher and our school’s management team.
  2. Trafalgar Castle School, an all-girls, independent day and boarding school for grades 4 through 12. Located in Whitby, Ontario, we’ve been educating girls since 1874 within a warm and progressive community that offers exceptional academics and prepares young women to make a difference in the world. For a start, there is no other all-girls day and boarding school like us in Canada. We have been at the forefront of girls’ education for almost 150 years. At just over 230 students from Grade 4 to Grade 12, we are small by design. That means every girl is recognized and honored for the individual she is. We believe the best entry point to a large and complex world is a warm and personal learning environment with ample opportunities for personal discovery and growth. You want your daughter to be known and cared for while she pursues her dream to design a zero-emission engine, work in international medicine, write young adult fiction, or whatever other aspiration she holds in her heart. And because she is an individual with unique talents and passions, you know she will flourish within a small, welcoming community that offers an exceptional education and provides for her personal growth. Sometimes we say, “there’s no such thing as a Trafalgar girl,” because so many different girls of diverse backgrounds and interests thrive here. But we also know exactly what a Trafalgar girl is: engaged in her learning, interested in her world, and making a difference in her community. Not all girls arrive that way, but our responsive educational environment ensures that she will feel known by her teachers, supported by her classmates, and energized with a sense of belonging. Most of all, she will discover the power of her voice here. Trafalgar Castle offers an all-girls education that unites tradition with innovation. We care deeply about how girls learn and offer the experiences they need to build critical thinking, creativity, confidence, and leadership. Today’s young women are entering a fast-changing world that demands much of them. The Trafalgar experience prepares them to live with purpose and lead with conviction wherever their future takes them. Our graduates are ready for the world. They leave the Castle with the confidence and vision they need to live lives of consequence and courage. And they join a network of talented and generous alumnae around the world who embrace them warmly and guide them wisely. We believe that students learn best in a warm and supportive environment where laughter and friendship live alongside an exciting curriculum and excellence in teaching. Our approach to teaching and learning understands the vast and often untapped potential within each learner, and our Lower School team works collaboratively and effectively to help each girl strive to reach her personal best. Across the Lower School, our small class size, combined with enrichment and strong learning supports ensures that each student is encouraged to reach her full potential. Caring home from teachers, subject tutorials, peer tutoring, and after-school study support combine to create a nurturing school community. Our curriculum and our approach to teaching and learning address the needs of girls at each stage of development. We believe in laying a firm foundation of knowledge and skills and work to ensure each student consolidates her understanding and grows in her thinking as she moves through each grade In the Upper School, girls are challenged to focus and deepen their knowledge and skills while exploring meaningful connections across a broad range of academic disciplines. Courses in the arts, languages, sciences, and humanities provide each student with the opportunity to discover and embolden her passion for learning. Skilled and caring teachers help each student push beyond the limits of her prior understanding, strengthening her ability to tackle complex problems, and teaching her to persevere with determination and confidence.
  3. We inspire our girls and our teachers to dream of a better world and then empower them to create it. As a small school, we foster an environment that nourishes an authentic experience founded on developing individualized excellence, leadership, kindness, and global-mindedness. We encourage girls to be open to new challenges, open to taking risks, and open to failing forward. We want to build resilience in our students, and we ground both our teaching and coaching practices in growth mindset theory. We believe in the importance of cooperative learning structures and activities that get our students to work and think together. Whether through Harkness dialogue or authentic performance projects such as our traditional House plays, our girls learn how to listen deeply and respectfully, appreciate a diversity of perspectives, and speak using their genuine voices. Traf girls take advantage of opportunities to engage and collaborate with local and international partners. In the heart of downtown Montreal, our diverse school community challenges and inspires girls to embrace learning, be confident, and shape a better world. We want our students to be life-long learners and have the independent thinking skills they need to be engaged citizens of the world. We believe this starts with curiosity. Through a variety of guided inquiry and perspective-taking activities, our students learn to ask meaningful questions rather than just find the “right” answers. Self-compassion, empathy, and concern for the well-being of others are behaviors that are reinforced daily at Trafalgar. Our Wellness program teaches students what it means to be more mindful and helps cultivate a practice of being present. In both class and through special co-curricular projects, Trafalgar students learn about the importance of building a more sustainable world. Trafalgar first opened its doors to students in September 1887, making it Montreal's oldest, English private school for girls. Effie Baker was the only student that day, but another arrived that evening, as did many more in the weeks and years to come. The opening followed years of dedicated planning by several visionary Montreal leaders, beginning with Donald Ross. Ross acquired a property called the Trafalgar Estate, then generously made a bequest of it so that trustees could erect, establish and forever maintain a school for girls.
  4. Trafalgar Junior School is a community school situated in Twickenham in the London borough of Richmond Upon Thames. We are a three-form entry school of about 350 pupils. At Trafalgar, we have a vibrant English and maths curriculum embedded across the school. Good quality ‘real books’ are a common feature of our English lessons, together with the use of a range of technology and drama to enthuse the children and make the learning exciting maths lessons focus on the key skills, whilst always aiming to have a ‘real life’ feel to make the learning relevant to the children and their life experience. We are very proud of the breadth of our curriculum throughout the school and we also place a high value on music, the arts, sport, and personal, social, and health education. This is evident particularly in our regular themed weeks or days, such as Sport for All Week, Science Day, and Performing Arts Week. As part of these events, the children meet and work with professional artists, writers, and sports personalities. Other visitors include poets, theatre groups, artists, as well as teachers from other countries who share their culture and language with us, including visitors from our link schools in India and Spain. Our school has many awards including Artsmark Gold, Eco and Healthy Schools status, and the full British Council International Schools Award. We have an exciting program of visits throughout the four years. As well as visiting museums, theatres, places of worship and art galleries, children visit a local nature reserve, Kew Gardens, HMS Belfast, and Hampton Court Palace, to name but a few. We have a rich and exciting learning environment. Staff and pupils work together to create colorful, vibrant classrooms where teaching and learning are celebrated. Classrooms are well resourced and creatively used to facilitate interactive learning. Other dedicated teaching spaces include a music room, a computer suite, and nearby playing fields, all of which promote purposeful learning with lots of fun along the way. We have an extensive range of clubs on offer both at lunchtime and after school. These include fee-paying clubs run by trained coaches and tutors and free clubs run by school staff. The program is always changing and growing but there is always something for everyone, for example, basketball, photography, and creative dance. The children at Trafalgar feel that they are listened to and that their contributions are respected and, when appropriate, acted upon. This is evident in classroom life, in discussions, debating activities, and “Circle Time”, and in the work of our thriving School Council, which has elected representatives from each class. Children also enjoy opportunities to take real responsibility in roles such as librarians, Green Team organizers, and gardeners. Our Green Team communicators lead the school in our focus as an eco-friendly school. Many of our Year 6 children take on responsibilities such as ‘welcomer’ and ‘playleader’ – and they all take their roles very seriously. We have always believed at Trafalgar that the welfare and care of our children are of utmost importance, not just in supporting their learning, but also in helping them to develop as well-rounded, confident, and happy individuals, ready for the next stage of their learning. We promote healthy lifestyles and discuss with children ways of solving problems and dealing with difficulties. We believe that dialogue with parents concerning issues of health and happiness is equally vital. We aim to be an inclusive school where everyone is welcome and all unique contributions are valued. We work proactively to remove barriers that can hinder or exclude individual pupils or groups of pupils from learning and joining in. Our work with the children is continually reviewed so we can assess how successful we are being at making sure everyone, whatever their gender, race, disability, or additional educational needs, is included, treated equally, and their needs are met. A close and supportive partnership between school and parents is important to us. Parents are welcome to come and help in school and we have a thriving and supportive PTA, which not only raises funds but also helps to create the sense of community that is so important to Trafalgar. We aim for regular communication with parents through our ‘Home School links books’ and newsletters. Our regularly updated website also keeps everyone in touch. Curriculum evenings, parent consultations, and open afternoons are regular dates in the school calendar and these are always great opportunities for us to build the “home/school” partnership. Trafalgar Junior School is well known and liked in the local community. The school choir has performed at a local shopping center, gardening center, and old people’s home, and we have had close links with our nearby church. Local people love to come to our extensive and varied Summer Fair which is always a great community occasion. Our successful “Meet the Author” evenings are very popular, not only giving opportunities for our children to meet real authors in person but also these events are advertised locally and open to the public. We hold the International School award and have developed a strong global education curriculum through our links with schools in Spain and India.

View full school
