Sunnybrook is a vibrant, co-ed elementary school, located in North Toronto. Small class sizes, caring teachers, and strong academics inspire our students to become independent, knowledgeable, and confident learners with an understanding of their world, locally and globally. Our innovative, international curriculum helps them to develop skills and knowledge and nurtures their personal, creative, and academic growth. Sunnybrook is focused on student agency, and developing social and emotional awareness. We were the first school in Ontario to offer the IB PYP, which is enriched at SBS with Singapore Math, 1:1 iPads, and a strong French program. You want your child to become well-rounded, independent, happy, and healthy in mind, body, and spirit. Strong academics, nourishment of your child's physical and emotional needs as well as active nurturing of creative and social development are the goals of Sunnybrook School. Each child is encouraged to learn and grow in an atmosphere of affection and mutual respect. We know our children are growing into a world of rapid change. This means that together with the traditional skills of literacy and numeracy our students must learn the skill set commonly known as 'Twenty-first Century Skills'. These include: Global awareness and environmental literacy Citizenship (local, global, digital) Critical thinking skills (analysis, perspective thinking, metacognition) Communication skills (presentation, writing, multi-media, multi-linguist) Collaboration skills Creativity in multiple areas Information literacy, media awareness Learning how to learn Independence, responsibility, initiative, flexibility, resilience Sunnybrook School was founded in 1952 by Mrs. Irmingard Hoff, as one of North Toronto's first Preschools. It was originally located in Leaside, and in 1960 the school moved to the present Merton St. location occupying its purpose-built premises. A culture of innovation and continuous improvement has guided Sunnybrook School since its earliest days. During the first Merton St. years, the school grew to include grades one through four. In 1985 Mrs. Hoff's daughter, Irene Davy, Ph.D., became the director of the school. That same year a neighboring property was purchased and an addition was built, improving the facilities by adding a gym and three classrooms. Preschool classes were phased out in the 1980ʼs to make way for grades 5 and 6. Three further renovations followed the most recent one in 2011 Sunnybrook is a full elementary school offering JK to grade 6, with one class per grade. In April 1999, Sunnybrook School was Canadaʼs first English-speaking school to adopt the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. We have contributed to the IB community on many levels, taking pride in our active participation in the IB world. In 2018 Irene Davy passed the role of Principal on to Tralee Brunn. Ms. Brunn works with her two Vice Principals, Michael Rossiter, and Tanya Low, to lead SBS into its new phase. Mrs. Davy enjoys her continued involvement in a consulting role. View full school
