Stepson is a two-form entry primary school with a distinctive character, which is currently expanding to a three-form entry school. Staff & pupils are ambitious & confident – performance at KS2 shows our pupils outperform their national peers & make more progress too. The school serves & is surrounded by the Burdett Estate, itself refurbished in 2001 and our premises have recently been refurbished and extended too. It’s this position at the heart of our community that gives Stebon School the platform to succeed. Following recent refurbishments, our premises provide bright, spacious & comfortable learning spaces that our pupils love. Our pupils are at the heart of everything we do. They are happy, friendly & well-behaved & they love learning. They achieve results in all subjects that meet or exceed the national average & do it all with a smile on their face. Unsurprisingly, their attendance is excellent. Our vision is expressed as a set of six promises which we make to every Stebon child. We are all learners and together, we can achieve great things. We have a whole school responsibility to ensure that teachers provide quality first teaching for all the children in the class, including those with special educational needs. Though there may be times when children are withdrawn from specific programs which support their learning, wherever possible they should be included within the classroom and lessons should be differentiated to enable all students to take part. Diversity and differences are celebrated at Stebon and seen as an opportunity for learning not a barrier to learning. At Stepson we have a family-centered culture. Children with special educational needs and their families have a unique knowledge of their own needs and circumstances. They have views about what they find difficult and what sort of help they would like to make the most of their time at school. Children are encouraged to participate in all the decision-making processes including the setting of learning targets. They contribute fully to the Annual Review meeting and are involved in discussions about transitions and secondary school choices. Children with special educational needs are represented on our school council and are members of our Playground Buddy team. At Stepson most learning takes place in cross-curricular lessons based on a theme. Each term every class studies a different theme, some are science-based, some are historical and others have a geographical bias. Throughout a year pupils will experience one of each. The themes are exciting and pupils have the opportunity to help to plan them. In addition to the class themes, the Stebon curriculum includes themed weeks and days which are a focus for the whole school. These special themes reflect the context of the school and our local community and include Eid, Black History Week, Friendship Week, Comic Relief Week, and Be Healthy Week. It is a curriculum that has been designed & shaped over many years to be as exciting as it is relevant & to fulfill our school vision of preparing our pupils for life as global citizens in modern Britain.
