Below you will find information on our current measures to ensure that we are always focusing on the students. Please let us know if you have any ideas for further improvements. You will find the literature for your study program both for a loan and for studies in its reading-halls in our library. Also, the library offers access to many search facilities and databases via the internet. Furthermore, you may also access the library database from your smartphone. Learning and engagement go beyond the classroom. At the University of the Southwest, academics are one aspect of the student experience. Whether you live on campus or commute from home, the opportunities to participate in student activities are abundant, and the effects are boundless. Located in Hobbs, New Mexico, the University of the Southwest's story is an inspiring one. It is a story of vision and dreams, faith and determination, work, and wisdom. It encompasses countless numbers of hearts and hands who have joined together to build an institution that not only enriches human lives but also glorifies God. It is the story of one community's belief in the future. In the first half of the century, the story begins, so it is told when "a young man on horseback scaled the heights near Cloudcroft and climbed the Wofford fire lookout tower to gain a panoramic view of 'The Land of Enchantment.' In prayerful meditation atop the tower, the youth was inspired to beseech God to give him New Mexico for Christian Education." Through the intervening years, we are told, "God made this young man ready to help answer his prayer." That young man was B. Clarence Evans, and he was destined to become the founder and first president of what was to become the University of the Southwest eventually. And so, after many prayers and dreams and plans, Clarence Evans finally saw his "college for Christian Education" become a reality. Hobbs Baptist College was chartered as a two-year junior college in 1956 and changed to New Mexico Baptist College when the school became a four-year college in 1958. Within a few years, however, it became apparent that the college had grown beyond the original design, and the move to a larger, permanent location became a motivating force. By 1961, the present site north of Hobbs on the Lovington Highway was obtained. In 1962, to reflect the expanded vision of the entire community that had now embraced this fledgling institution as their own, College of the Southwest was founded as an independent, non-denominational, four-year liberal arts college to serve the southeastern New Mexico and West Texas region, an approximately 21,000 square-mile service area. In 2008, the Board of Trustees voted to change the name of College of the Southwest to University of the Southwest to communicate better the type of academic community into which the institution was evolving.

Southwest Baptist University is committed to the success of its students, in and out of the classroom. Faculty and staff are dedicated to providing resources and assistance to help students reach their full potential. Various academic resources are available to SBU students, including tutoring, study sessions, and one-on-one academic advisement. Class sizes are intentionally small, with an average class size of just 24 students, which allows for personalized instruction. Faculty maintain regular office hours and are easily accessible to students. Peer mentoring is available through the Run 2 Win program, and the University Libraries offers research assistance, study rooms, computer labs, and other resources. Classes often include group projects, student presentations, community projects, guest speakers, and other opportunities that provide students with real-world experiences. SBU offers many academic-based clubs and organizations that allow students to connect based on shared academic interests and then use what they are learning in the classroom to make a difference in the community. The Gordon & Judy Dutile Honors Program offers additional opportunities for selected high-achieving students. In contrast, other students benefit from other unique academic experiences such as the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) or attending professional seminars and conferences. Many students also complete at least one internship during their time as a student at SBU. The relationships students develop with faculty often build connections that lead to these internship opportunities. SBU students have completed various internships, including opportunities at large IT companies, area businesses, professional sports organizations, churches, and so many more. Companies and organizations enjoy having SBU students as interns because of their academic preparedness and the work ethic instilled in them. For example, The Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C., has just one accounting internship available each year and has given that position to an SBU student four of the past five years. Internship opportunities, community involvement, and faculty connections all help lead to career placement upon graduation. Various career fairs and networking opportunities are held across campus each year, and the Career Services office helps provide valuable job search resources. Faculty encourage students to work hard and pursue great career opportunities while using their connections to build a student's network. For example, graduates from the computer and information science department have achieved 100% job placement within one month of graduation for 12 of the past 14 years. View full university
