- Southdown is a large primary school, currently 403 pupils from ages 3-11. We are situated in the town of Buckley which has a thriving and growing community. We work closely with all the schools in the Buckley, Mynydd Isa area. At Southdown, we strive to provide education, set good foundations for future development, and help children to realize that learning is fun and lifelong. We have high expectations for our pupils in their work and behavior, supported by a dedicated team of staff who work extremely hard to ensure that all our children reach their full potential. On this website, we aim to provide you with useful and up-to-date information so viewing our site regularly will allow you to keep in touch with everyday life at our busy school. Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. They underpin our teaching and learning and provide an environment that prepares our pupils as confident, happy citizens. Southdown School was opened in 1976 for children aged 4 – 11. We also have a Nursery and children aged 3 to 4 can attend on a part-time basis (5 mornings or afternoons sessions per week). This year the 412 children are organized into 16 mixed ability classes from Nursery to Year 6. The school’s organization is reviewed each year and may be changed to accommodate the number of pupils within the school. Staff plan activities and learning experiences which are appropriate to children’s stages of development, age, and ability. The activities and learning experiences may be whole class tasks, at other times children will work together in small groups or independently. Most lessons are taught in mixed ability groups but some grouping by ability may occur in the core subjects of English and Mathematics.
