We are the University of Applied Sciences in Saarbrücken, Germany. About 15% of the overall budget of the University comes from application-oriented research projects with companies and public funding bodies of the University. We have earned high marks: In its review of 2014, the German Council of Science and Humanities concluded that how saar demonstrates high performance, great potential for its further development, and remarkable strength and success in application-oriented research and knowledge transfer. For the fourth time, htw saar hosted the GradNight, a ceremony for its graduates. One thousand six hundred guests attended this spectacular event, including students, their families and friends, guests from the world of politics and business, employees of htw saar and, of course, the guests of honor, the graduates! htw saar is the application-oriented University in the federal state of Saarland. The University offers more than 45 Bachelor's and Master's programs in the following five academic units: Business, Architecture & Civil Engineering, Engineering, Social Sciences, and German/French studies. htw saar counts over 6,000 students in the summer semester of 2016. The percentage of international students (16%) is significantly higher than the national average. Currently, there are ca. 700 international students from over 80 countries learning together. For more than 25 years, the University has been researching at an international level and with industry partners worldwide. With about €9,4 million of third-party funds, htw saar belongs to the top-ranked Universities of Applied Sciences in Germany. Research is fundamental, and great importance is attached to applied research and development. That is why all students are welcome to participate in various R&D projects to understand German cutting-edge technology and innovation better. htw saar also assumes a pioneering role in shaping the fully integrated German-French degree programs in conjunction with the partner university in Metz, France. In 1978, long before ERASMUS and Bologna, the two universities founded the unique Franco-German Institute for Technology and Business, called ISFATES in French and DFHI in German, which today offers twelve German-French double-degree-programs. htw saar assumes a pioneering role among Germany's most substantial research Universities of Applied Sciences. Between 1989 and 1992, the Federal-State Commission's model test for stimulating applied research at universities of applied sciences (SAFF - Stimulierung Anwendungsbezogener Forschung a Fachhochschulen) was implemented at htw saar. Since then, it has substantially reinforced its strengths in applied research, scientifically founded, practice-oriented teaching, and knowledge transfer. While the academic profile of a university of applied sciences in Germany may once have been simply an expression of the conventional division between the traditional universities and those higher education institutions with a more technical or vocational focus, today's universities of applied sciences have developed profiles that reflect the much broader range of challenges and expectations with which the modern education landscape now deals. The universities of applied sciences contribute directly to solving some of the most pressing problems in today's society. They produce young skilled graduates, foster regional development, work together with industrial partners to transform research results into marketable innovations, leverage the potential of young people from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds, offer continuous and further education initiatives for those without a university education, and strengthen and encourage civic participation and community development. Against a backdrop of constant change, it is clear that no single institution can meet all of the demands and challenges mentioned above. Delivering high-quality and internationally respected teaching and research is something that can only be achieved by the higher education system as a whole. As a result, the German higher education landscape has over the last decade or so been involved in the process of differentiation in which the institutions within the HE sector have been obliged to define their core missions, to establish their distinct areas of specialization, and to make intelligent use the available resources. Saarland University is a modern university within the Saar-Lor-Lux region – an active part of Europe defined by the shared borders between Germany, France, and Luxembourg. An international perspective has been a defining feature of Saarland University ever since it was established in cooperation with France in 1948. Today, 16,900 young people are studying in Saarbrücken and Homburg (faculty of medicine), 19 percent of whom are international students. Located in a pleasant woodland setting, the university campus offers students and researchers a broad range of sporting and cultural activities. Together with the numerous cafés and restaurants, it makes the campus an ideal place to relax between lectures or after work. And thanks to the high-speed ICE train link, it takes only two hours to travel from Saarbrücken to Paris. The unit's training scheme for young entrepreneurs offers students the possibility to work on project assignments on behalf of local and regional companies. The University has developed a unique profile in new technologies such as informatics, biosciences, or nanotechnologies, which has led to the establishment of numerous spin-off companies now active on and around campus. These developments highlight the University's role as one of the largest employers in the region and its importance in promoting technology transfer and knowledge to the entire Saar-Lor-Lux region. Founded in November 1948, Saarland University was initially established as a bilingual university that combined French and German educational traditions while offering a unique European perspective. The University, which was established with the support of the French Government and the University of Nancy, was the first to be founded west of the River Rhine after the Second World War. At the time, Saarland found itself in the particular situation of being partly autonomous and linked to France by economic and monetary union. Before the University's foundation, clinical training courses for medical students were introduced at the state hospital in Homburg/Saar in January 1946 with the "Centre Universitaire d'Études Supérieures de Hombourg" established on 8 May 1947 under the patronage of the University of Nancy.
