- Runnymede College is a leading private non-denominational British school in Spain offering a British education to boys and girls of all nationalities from the age of three to eighteen. The School regards its task as being to provide its pupils an academically excellent, all-around liberal humanistic education and the necessary basis to succeed in the adult world, and above all, to help them to acquire a moral sense as members of the international, worldwide community. Runnymede College was founded by Arthur F Powell and his wife Julia in 1967. Arthur Powell became Founder Chairman of the National Association of British Schools in Spain in 1978, from which organization he resigned in October 1991. Mr. Powell and his wife Julia managed the School until their retirement in 1998. Runnymede College is a selective entry school. The admissions process is designed to ensure pupils joining the school will be able to cope with the British curriculum and enjoy their learning experience at Runnymede. All parents and pupils are invited to meet the Headmaster who personally oversees every application with the support of his admissions team. In the Foundation Stage (Pre-Nursery, Nursery, and Reception), children attend school for a full day and are taught by the class teachers, specialist teachers, and teaching assistants. Children are engaged in whole class, small group, and individual activities, which are tailored to their learning needs. Activities are planned around topic themes and we incorporate cultural activities and festivals which are of significance to our families. Reading is taught primarily by phonics, but our educational approach varies to suit every child. Maths is taught using practical examples, early computer skills are introduced, and appropriate technology is utilized to reinforce learning. Our philosophy in Key Stage 1 is to help the children to develop as confident, enthusiastic learners, by providing them with an engaging, broad, and rich curriculum. To get the most out of learning, the children need to work on four basic skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Through Literacy, we provide them with the opportunity to express themselves clearly and creatively. They listen to and read stories, nonfiction, and poetry from a range of different cultures, explore their imagination and learn to read to discover facts. We, as adults, use Maths as part of our everyday lives, whether shopping, traveling, or working. We endeavor to set our mathematical activities wherever possible in a practical context, related to the real world they will later encounter. Learning to calculate with money, for example, becomes much more real through role play in the class shop! All children have a natural curiosity about the way the world works. Through Science activities, we can teach them how to get the answers to questions such as how plants grow or why it is dark at night. Any opportunities to make Science practical are taken highlights of the year being visits to the local Science museum and in Term 3 to an Outdoor Educational Centre, where the children have the first-hand experience of caring for plants and animals. Sixth-form students at Runnymede have a dedicated team of staff who are there to support their university applications process, whether they are applying to the UK, USA, Spain, or elsewhere in the world. The Headmaster, Mr. F. Powell, is ultimately responsible for all applications and takes a keen interest in ensuring every student at Runnymede has the opportunity to apply for the higher education institutions which are right for them. The Headmaster is supported by two Co-Heads of Sixth Form, as well as form tutors, subject teachers, and administrative staff, all of whom work hard to make sure that our students achieve offers from some of the world’s best universities. The Headmaster also undertakes a yearly tour of US and UK universities, meeting admissions tutors and making useful contacts. Students receive detailed advice on how to write their UCAS personal statements, and they work closely with their referee to complete an application that highlights their academic and extracurricular skills and achievements. With an enviable record of securing places for Runnymede students at Oxford and Cambridge Universities, the school offers special support for viable Oxbridge candidates – including reading lists, advice on courses and colleges, and mock interviews. This support is directed by members of staff who themselves attended Oxford or Cambridge. We are delighted that so many of our students also go on to study at other top universities in the UK, including Imperial, UCL, and Warwick. We have representatives from these institutions and more coming to Runnymede throughout the academic year to deliver presentations and offer targeted advice to our students. We are also delighted that a growing number of students receive offers to study at world-class US universities, including Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Brown, NYU, and Georgetown. Runnymede staff work with students applying to the USA to help them with their Common Application and essays, and we also offer support to students taking the SATs. View full school
- Runnymede St Edward's is an Independent Catholic Preparatory School for boys and girls aged 3-11 years, welcoming children of all faiths. The school is built on the tradition of our founders. Based on their vision, Runnymede is a place in which individuals can develop fully, contributing as happy and caring members of a school community. Children’s unique talents are valued, and they learn to live as well-mannered, self-disciplined, and confident individuals. Located in Sandfield Park, West Derby, Liverpool, Runnymede has a long tradition of providing an outstanding all-around education. The school holds an excellent academic record and we are proud of our musical and sporting tradition. At Runnymede, we pride ourselves on taking in children of all abilities and supporting them to reach their full potential. We prepare children thoroughly for secondary school entrance exams enabling them to enter the second phase of their education with confidence. Runnymede is a family-orientated school situated in a beautiful building which creates a wonderful working environment for our children to thrive in. We are a Choir School for Liverpool Metropolitan Catholic Cathedral and take choristers from Year 4 to Year 6. Their voices can be heard every morning echoing throughout the school and playground. Our Mission Statement: "Inspire, Challenge, Support through Faith". The Runnymede curriculum is tailored to the needs of the pupils and their future aspirations. We seek to challenge, inspire and support children to perform by their abilities. While the National Curriculum is a useful starting point, our highly qualified class and subject teachers adapt and enhance their programs of study to support all children to achieve their potential. Classes are small and therefore a very individual approach can be offered to every child. In addition to the core subjects of English and Mathematics, the Runnymede syllabus includes French and Spanish, Science, Geography, Music, Religious Education, ICT, Art, Design and Technology, PE and Games, which includes swimming, rugby, football, netball, hockey, and tennis. In Year 5 and 6, the children are often placed in sets for English and Maths. In these years we also start working with children whose choice of Secondary school is dependent on an entrance exam. Being independent of any Secondary school means we can work with both children and parents to choose the secondary school that is best for the child’s ability and ongoing education. A structured reading scheme is also in operation in each class offering a variety of reading materials. Our reading program is delivered by the class teacher, supported by the child’s parents, and volunteer parents who come into our school and listen to the children read every week. From Reception onwards, children are given homework daily. Homework is very important as it supports and enhances the curriculum and develops a good work ethic. We have very strong home-school links as the school and home are in partnership, ensuring the very best for each child. We are proud that our children achieve high levels in the National Curriculum tests at the end of each key stage. At Runnymede, we believe learning goes beyond the classroom and during the year all classes will be involved in school trips. Our trips are educational and help the children get a better insight into aspects of their learning. Each year group has 3 trips a year, enriching the curriculum. For example, Stockley Farm Christmas Experience, Victorian-themed days at Styal Mill and Norton Priory, a Roman Experience at Chester, a coastal field study of Llandudno, orchestral concerts at the Philharmonic Hall for Early Years and Upper Juniors. In addition to these trips, Year 5 has a 3 day residential trip to Dobroyd Castle, Todmorden, and Year 6 has a 5 day residential trip to Patterdale, Lake District. Religious Education (R.E.) at Runnymede is based on the national scheme ‘Come and See.’ Religious Education recognizes and enables a dialogue at many levels. Three main questions are to be answered by all the children from Nursery to Year 6. At Runnymede St Edward’s School, we’re very proud of our history, which stretches back to 1852 when a Catholic Institute was founded. His statue is sited in St John’s Gardens, Liverpool, alongside St George’s Hall. View full school
