At Roeper, we care deeply about the needs of the whole child. We understand the importance of these formative years and nurture and challenge children at every stage and grade. We believe, as our co-founder Annemarie Roeper said, "that the core purpose of education is to empower children to become independent thinkers and compassionate citizens of an interconnected world." Ours is a school where a child's curiosity and critical thinking are nurtured, and the opportunity to stretch his or her academic abilities is part of our daily experience. Watching the interactions between students and teachers in classrooms with small class sizes, you see our faculty empowering learners to find their voice and encouraging them to share their ideas. Roeper graduates attend and thrive in the most selective colleges and universities throughout the country. Instead, these values are integral to everything we do at and for the school. The Roeper School admits students without regard to ethnicity, gender, cultural background, religion, or sexual orientation. At Roeper, we believe in each student's power to reach their full potential and contribute to the world in meaningful ways. Our academic curriculum emphasizes conceptual and experiential learning opportunities that facilitate specific goals for individuals guided by their intellectual and personal characteristics, needs, and interests. Our students graduate with a knowledge of how the world works and a hunger to play a meaningful role in it. In the Lower School, homerooms serve as the centers for language arts activities, social studies, and mathematics. Additional classes in science, music, World Languages, art, dance and movement, physical education, library, and computer skills are part of the curriculum. The cornerstone of our Middle School is incorporating the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs of gifted students in a state of transition. Our program provides optimum individualization of instruction for an age group characterized by wide variability among students. The Middle School curriculum includes English literature, composition, social studies, world languages, mathematics, computer study, science, fine arts, physical education, and interscholastic sports. The school also provides opportunities for advanced work at the Upper School level. The curriculum in the Upper School includes core classes, comprising English, history, math, science and world languages, and a wide range of electives and Advanced Placement courses. Opportunities for independent study, self-directed study, internships, and mentorships allow students to pursue their passions within and beyond the classroom; the fine arts program provides opportunities for performances or participation at all levels. Physical education activities range from individual conditioning programs to interscholastic team sports.
