Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto (UMP) is the most prominent private university in the Western part of Central Java. As the 2nd best Muhammadiyah University in Central Java, UMP has gained B (excellent) for its institutional accreditation. Currently, UMP is ranked the 6th among 77 Muhammadiyah Universities in Indonesia. UMP is established in 1995 by the Decree of the Director-General of Higher Education Ministry of Education and Culture 345 / Dikti / Kep / 1995 dated July 26, 1995, as the conversion from the Institute of Teacher Training and Education Muhammadiyah Purwokerto. Currently, UMP has developed 11 faculties, 33 departments, and postgraduate programs. The faculties are Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Faculty of Psychology, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Art (Letters), Faculty of Islamic Studies, Faculty of Economics and Business, Faculty of Health Sciences, and Faculty of Medicine. For the postgraduate program, UMP offers a master's degree in English Language Education, Primary Education, Management, and Social Education. Realizing that global networking is essential, UMP is continuously developing its networking with partners overseas. From 2012 until 2017, UMP has been working with more than 80 universities and institutions overseas. Some programs have been developed to improve the quality of staff and students. UMP has also developed six research centers: Centre of Plant Biotechnology, Centre of Polymer Hydrogel, Centre of Cancer Herbal Medication, Centre of Multimedia and Games, Centre of TESOL, and Centre of Health Economic Studies. The symbol represents philosophical meaning (as stated in the Statutes of Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto Chapter I regarding General Terms – Article 4 Verse 1). The symbol of Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto is an organizational symbol drawn between a picture of 19 (nineteen) grains of rice and 12 (twelve) buds of cotton, and it is written UNIVERSITAS MUHAMMADIYAH PURWOKERTO in circular form on the flower-shaped frame with a blue-colored background. The pentagon frame: Educating its learners to become an academic workforce with the spirit of Islam and Pancasila so that they will have meaningful roles in the development of society, nation, and religion.
