  1. Established in 1909, the Naval Postgraduate School has provided outstanding graduate education and research programs for more than 100 years. Before becoming the NPS home, the Hotel Del Monte was one of the most elegant seaside resorts in the world. The NPS Welcome and Historical Center provides static displays and interactive media, offering visitors a greater understanding of the university's historical contributions and its current mission and objectives. The Naval Postgraduate School is a graduate university offering masters and doctoral degrees in more than 70 fields of study to the U.S. Armed Forces, DOD civilians, and international partners. The Naval Postgraduate School provides relevant and unique advanced education and research programs to increase the combat effectiveness of commissioned officers of the naval service to enhance the United States' security. In support of the foregoing precedingstain academic excellence, NPS will foster a program of relevant and meritorious thesis and research experiences for NPS students that informs the curricula, supports the Navy's needs, and The Department of Defense builds the intellectual capital of NPS faculty. To support the core Navy mission, NPS's programs are inherently joint, inter-agency, and international. Transform NPS students through excellent education programs consisting of relevant and innovative instruction and research experiences. Build and maintain excellence in instruction and research in our faculty. Leverage the opportunities created by sponsored activities to benefit the education of naval students. Relentlessly pursue organizational effectiveness and efficiency. The NPS Fact Book is produced annually to provide detailed data, facts, and figures about its students, faculty, staff, and resources. NPS is accredited by the Senior Commission of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), a regional collaboration of higher education four-year and graduate institutions. 2. Jožef Stefan International Postgraduate School (IPS) was established in 2004 as an independent higher education institution. The Slovenian National Council approved its study programs for Higher Education. The initiative for the establishment of IPS came from the Jožef Stefan Institute (JSI). It was strongly supported by industry (Gorenje, Kolektor, Salonit) and an international network of cooperating universities and research institutes from the European Union, the USA, Japan, and several other countries. Jožef Stefan Institute provides a central research-educational basis. Within the IPS invited research institutes, industrial and other enterprises contribute their knowledge and innovation capacities for solving developmental problems. The mission of IPS is to provide the highest quality postgraduate studies at the master's and doctoral levels through joint research and educational process in intensive research and development and innovative environment and to contribute to the strengthening of the role of science and high technologies in the developmental potential of society. This can substantially contribute to the economic strength and harmonic social development.IPS acts as a center of excellence, integrating basic research with postgraduate education and the development of innovations. Research results are directly included in innovation projects for the development of production, services, and management. Magistrands and doctorands, together with their supervisors from IPS and co-mentors from practice, contribute to new primary research results and science-based introduction of innovations. Postgraduate studies for Master and Doctorate degrees are oriented towards solving research and development problems which require a multidisciplinary synthesis. The primary research-educational strategy of IPS is, therefore: Widening and deepening knowledge, and mastering and development of research methods and techniques, in natural sciences and high technologies, information and communication sciences and technologies, environmental sciences, and ecotechnologies, and in management of technologies and innovations – to support excellence in basic research, the strategic choice of priority developmental areas, systematic control and permanent innovation of processes and products, increasing economic efficiency and environmental acceptability Development of a necessary process of thinking which will support multidisciplinary communication, comprehensive definition of problems and their solving in group work, decision making in uncertain conditions, and long-term oriented strategic planning with an emphasis on sustainable development. Jožef Stefan Institute (JSI) is the leading research base of IPS with over four hundred researchers with doctoral degrees. More than one-third of them are elected university teachers. IPS engages researchers and university teachers for cooperation in research-innovation projects in the interest of IPS partners. JSI develops all types of research – from basic research to the direct transfer of research results into new processes and products. Priority is given to the interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary synthesis of primary research results and direct cooperation with industry and services' developmental capacities. Special care is given to research for environmental management and sustainable development. JSI has modern research equipment that is available to all qualified users. JSI research groups cooperate with leading research institutes and universities in their fields worldwide. In some fields, they contribute to the highest levels of European and global research. There is cooperation in about two hundred EU research projects and also extensive bilateral cooperation. View full university

  5. The International College for Postgraduate Buddhist Studies was founded in 1996 by Professor Akira Hirakawa as an institution dedicated to furthering research into Buddhism and educating new Buddhist scholars. Currently, the college has two affiliated institutes, i.e., the International Institute for Buddhist Studies and the Research Institute for Old Japanese Manuscripts of Buddhist Scriptures. A library whose collection amounts to more than 140,000 volumes of Buddhist studies and related areas. These facilities make possible fulfilling our duty of conducting Buddhist research and educating capable specialists in the field. It is well known that Buddhism was born 2,500 years ago in India and spread first across Asia, and now all over the world, surmounting national, ethnic, and cultural barriers. This makes a global perspective a fundamental desideratum in Buddhist studies. Our curriculum, designed to foster such a perspective, covers four cultural areas: South and Southeast Asia, Inner Asia, East Asia, and Pan-Asian culture. The International College for Postgraduate Buddhist Studies offers a five-year program leading to a Ph.D. degree. We accept four students per year. The quota of the entire college is thus 20 students. This number allows us to conduct small-group instruction in which we can answer the needs of each student. The students also benefit from study support programs offered by our Library and International Institute for Buddhist Studies staff. The college has its scholarship system, and students from abroad can apply for the dormitory facilities situated on the campus. Located in a quiet neighborhood in Bunkyō-Ku, Tokyo, the land which is now the college campus was the former residential site of Tokugawa Yoshinobu, Japan's last shogun, after relinquishing the power to the Meiji government. Surrounded by large trees and green lawns, the library, classrooms, and research spaces offer a perfect oasis to pursue the study of Buddhism in a calm, sunny environment. Research into Buddhism focuses on two main aspects, i.e., textual studies and philosophical studies based on primary sources. The college boasts an impressive collection of books and materials, including almost all available editions of the Buddhist Canon and digital archives of old Japanese manuscripts of Buddhist texts dating back to the Nara and Heian periods. This greatly facilitates the research in both textual studies and philosophical studies. We hope that the students will better understand the universal truths through the study of Buddhism and succeed in tackling such contemporary issues as bioethics and environmental problems. Paradoxically, this has made us forget to search for humanity's fundamental question: 'How should human beings live their lives?'. Bioethics and environmental issues illustrate this impasse of humankind. To answer the problems confronting our age, our students are allowed to deepen their knowledge of other religions, such as Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Confucianism, Taoism, etc. We thus endeavor to educate specialists who will also be able to deal with religious problems in the international arena. We welcome all those interested in this field to join us on the path of Buddhist studies and open the gate to the vast Dharma treasure of eighty-four thousand teachings.
