  1. Pleasant Street Primary School pledges itself to be a place where uniqueness is celebrated and all individuals will find safety and respect for themselves, their families, and their way of life. We are a happy and diverse school in Liverpool City Centre, with a dedicated and hard-working team focused on providing a high-class education for pupils. Learning together, we respect each other’s values and traditions. We strive to create an inclusive and safe environment that guides and stimulates our children to achieve through enjoyment. At Pleasant Street, our mission statement underpins both our curriculum and our wider school ethos. This includes the importance we place on mutual respect, appreciation, and celebration of diversity in all its forms, whilst ensuring pupils learn both the British as well as human values which we as a school are committed to. Both are taught and a wider curriculum provides opportunities to teach children about the privileges of British society, including free speech and democracy, as well as British law which protects the rights of all our citizens to be safe, listened to, and to be treated equally with respect. We have devised our curriculum which we feel helps our children develop a knowledge and understanding of the world and our locality. We have planned topics to engage children’s interest and curiosity, whilst ensuring full coverage of the new National Curriculum. At Pleasant Street Primary School, we believe that literacy and communication are key life skills. Through the English curriculum, we will help children develop the skills and knowledge that will enable them to communicate effectively and creatively through spoken and written language and equip them with the skills to become lifelong learners. We want children to enjoy and appreciate literature and its rich variety. We have included information on reading and phonics in a separate section. By the time children leave our school, we expect them to be able to communicate effectively and confidently through speaking and listening, reading, and writing. We want every child to take pleasure in reading across a range of genres and have a strong motivation to read for a variety of purposes. “Every child deserves the best possible start in life and support to fulfill their potential. A child’s experience in the early years has a major impact on their future life chances. A secure, safe, and happy childhood is important in its own right, and it provides the foundation for children to make the most of their abilities and talents as they grow up.” At Pleasant Street Primary School we recognize that every child is a competent learner who can be resilient, capable, confident, and self-assured. We recognize that children develop in individual ways, at varying rates. Children’s attitudes and dispositions to learning are influenced by feedback from others we use praise and encouragement, as well as celebration and rewards, to encourage children to develop a positive attitude to learning. At Pleasant Street, we recognize that children learn to be strong and independent from secure relationships. We aim to develop caring, respectful, professional relationships with the children and their families. All areas of Learning and Development are important and interconnected. These areas are particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning. The indoor and outdoor learning environments are organized to allow children to explore and learn securely and safely. There are areas where the children can be active, or be quiet and rest. Both Nursery and Reception are set up in learning areas, where children can find activities, equipment, and resources independently. The provision in these areas includes familiar and continuously accessible activities and resources, as well as activities that are varied and enhanced to fit in with current themes and learning needs. Each day is composed of playing and learning through a balance of teaching, adult-led activities, and child-initiated time.
