Our staff is committed to encouraging student growth. We work to provide opportunities for students to connect and to the rest of the campus. The division of Student Development seeks to foster student development within the context of the University’s mission statement while serving students in a manner consistent with the example of Jesus Christ and our calling as Christians. Counseling is where you can talk safely with someone eager to listen to your concerns. It is time to learn new skills and new ways of looking at situations. At OBU, we are eager to come alongside you, listen carefully, and help you decide how to handle the difficulty you are facing. Some students benefit from one or two sessions of problem-solving, while some concerns may require more time. Our sincere intent is to provide adequate counsel based upon sound psychological understanding, Biblical principles, and Christian values. While we are eager and ready to help students who have a history of mental health challenges, we are prepared to help students with a wide range of issues in other areas as well. It takes quite a bit of courage to face life’s difficulties honestly, come to counseling, and work through complicated feelings, experiences, and life challenges. You do not go to the doctor only when you are sure you have heart disease, seeing the physician is smart when you have merely been feeling bad for a while and want to get things checked out. To seek out wise counsel amidst difficulty is just plain smart. A counselor can guide or coach you through a difficult season of your life, relationship, or time of decision. Ouachita provides opportunities for students to gain invaluable international experience all over the world. From France to Australia to Morocco to Costa Rica, we encourage our students to learn about the world by exploring it. Whether you are looking to see some of the world’s most famous art and architecture for a few weeks during the European Study Tour or immerse yourself fully in language and cultural study for a year in Japan, we have got something for everyone. In keeping with the University’s nature as a church-related, liberal arts institution, Riley-Hickingbotham Library’s mission is to be an integral part of the academic program by providing excellent service through bibliographical, physical, and intellectual access to recorded knowledge and information and, insofar as possible, sharing resources with individuals and institutions in the broader scholarly community. Riley-Hickingbotham Library serves Ouachita and the community as a learning center, supporting the educational process with varied media types. It accomplishes that task through the main library – which offers a Technology Enhanced Collaborative (TEC) study room, group study rooms, individual study space, Internet facilities, and ease of access to materials – and through the music library in Mabee Fine Arts Center, the science library in Jones Science Center, and the library resource room at New Life Church in Conway.
