Fachhochschule Ottersberg (University of applied sciences in Ottersberg) recently changed its name to “Hochschule für Künste im Sozialen, Ottersberg” (University of applied sciences and arts in Ottersberg). The new name highlights the value, success, and relevance of our university. It clearly states our vision and mission that our teaching staff and students always hold to: as artists committing to work for society. This spirit is why the university was established 45 years ago, and so will it be. We respond to and support the solution finding of today’s social problems. More and more shows that some groups have neither place nor voice in society. To release people’s creative potential and help provide them new opportunities to express their thoughts and feelings are what our students learn and experience. A variety of project works throughout their study brings students closer to the practical scene of social work and in contact with companies, clinics, social and pedagogic institutions. In this way, they can learn from concrete samples and are well-prepared to work professionally later on. We plan to offer new programs and further education, such as the certification as an alternative practitioner in the coming years. The university aims for social practice, in which the artistic potential is seen as human’s genuine potential, regardless of social, cultural, or ideological affiliations. Teaching and research focus on developing and supporting such potential through artistic practice in fine arts, art pedagogy, art therapy, and performing arts pedagogy. Through the study programs, the university allows students to develop their character to use artistic practice constructively, innovatively, and for society. Art, people, and society are the interrelated pillars that solidify artistic or applied and target group-based study programs together in theory and practice. These cornerstones lay the interdisciplinary foundation of the curriculum. Art and social action are closely combined to facilitate and promote personal and social development and health promotion through the medium of art. The university places artistic activity and aesthetic perception as specific forms of gaining knowledge and experience of the world, communication, and life skills. Art and science are merged in all programs as complementary tools to gain knowledge.
