Orchard Way Primary School is a popular, single-form entry Primary School in the London Borough of Croydon. We are very proud of our pupils’ achievements throughout their journey with us, which is brought about by our children’s attitude to learning, the dedication and commitment of our teachers, support staff, and governors, and the ongoing support of our parents and carers. We strive to develop pupil’s personal, social and academic skills and their love of learning to equip them with the skills necessary to be successful, independent, lifelong learners. This is reinforced by developing pupils’ understanding of Orchard Way Learning Skills (OWLS), which are: creativity, collaboration, engagement, imagination, knowledge of yourself as a learner, linking of learning, and resilience. Our lessons involve thinking about which OWLS will need to be used and reflections involve looking at which OWLS have aided the learning. We are an inclusive school and celebrate the diversity of our community and beyond. In 2016 our school was awarded the International Schools Award through the British Council and we use Assemblies and Philosophy for Children to develop pupils’ understanding and tolerance of issues relating to the world in which we live. We are committed to providing a caring, happy, welcoming environment that meets the needs of each child and ensures that all children have equal access to a broad and balanced curriculum including interaction with, and appreciation of, the arts and many opportunities for wider enrichment. We teach key skills and knowledge that lead to understanding and develop the confidence to succeed. We are committed to ensuring that every pupil leaves our school with high aspirations, an enduring enthusiasm for learning, and the confidence to address the world on their terms. Children can start Orchard Nursery in the school term following their third birthday. Coming to our nursery setting will allow your child to develop their social skills and begin to make new friends in a safe, educational, play-based setting that is run by qualified professionals. This is an important stage as it supports your child to develop and gain the skills needed for future learning including basic counting/number recognition, enjoyment of stories, phonics, social skills, and physical developmental play. Orchard Nursery is both part-time and full-time. We have 20 full-time and 12 part-time places available. If all the full-time places are not taken up, additional part-time places will be offered. If there are still vacancies remaining, parents with part-time places can ask to top up the part-time entitlement to a full-time place for which there will be a charge. All children can start Primary School in the September before their 5th Birthday if this falls between 1st September and 31st August. Parents can apply for up to six primary schools in Hackney including neighboring boroughs. If you want your child considered for our school, you will need to apply using the online application form. This is available from 1st September for admission to the following academic year. The form will be processed by Hackney Learning Trust. Early registration does not give priority as the closing date is the 15 January of the year of admission. To help a child achieve their personal best, we must engage their attention and stimulate their imagination. Orchard House School was formerly a family home and retains a happy, welcoming atmosphere, starting at the front door where the headmistress or a senior staff member greets each child by name every morning. Currently, we have approximately 300 pupils and 47 teaching staff, allowing each child a great deal of individual attention. There are rarely more than 20 pupils in any class, and in the early years, there are three teaching adults in attendance. Small group and 1:1 sessions are commonplace. Teachers take lunch with the children and our extensive extra-curricular activities allow teachers and pupils to interact in a more informal atmosphere. Our school was built in 1936 on a greenfield site and is now a thriving school with 560 pupils aged between 3 and 11 years. The Foundation Stage, which includes the Nursery and Reception classes, was judged to be ‘outstanding in the last Ofsted report. We are extremely lucky to have a large site that is dominated by a substantial green space to the rear of our Rainbow Building. This allows ample space for games and learning in the outdoor environment is a feature of all year groups’ learning.
