Newington House was the former home of colonial merchant and landowner John Blaxland, on the Parramatta River banks at Silverwater. The College opened its doors on 16 July 1863, with 16 students aged between seven and sixteen. The College was conceived as ‘…decidedly Wesleyan in its character. open to the sons of parents of all religious denominations.’ The College also functioned as the home for theological training for the Methodist Church in NSW until 1914. Our motto encapsulates the school’s vision: Newington is where each person can discover what is possible. Here at Stoke Newington School & Sixth Form, we pride ourselves in providing all our students with excellent creative teaching and learning opportunities within the curriculum and through our program of extra-curricular activities. We want all of our students to enjoy their secondary education, do exceptionally well academically, and grow personally and socially as active citizens in our community. Once your child has been accepted we make every effort to make their transition to secondary school as smooth and as enjoyable as possible. We have a sixth form block with state-of-the-art ICT facilities, a study space, a common room, and a cafe to provide a marvelous academic environment for our growing number of students. Our students get places at top universities, studying subjects including medicine, economics, and art. Academic excellence is key to students’ success. Our curriculum offer includes a wide range of A levels as well as our popular and highly rated BTEC sports course. The A-level subjects reflect our academic and creative school ethos ranging from English, the three sciences, and maths through to subjects such as music technology, art, and photography, as well as new subjects such as philosophy and economics. Our results are good and rising year after year. GCSE and A level results and progression from Year 11 and Year 13 are very strong. The fact that so many students choose to stay on into our Sixth Form and take the qualifications they need to get into the universities of their choice is proof of our success. We are proud of our award-winning reputation as a creative and vibrant school and the unique opportunities that this brings to our students, staff, and community. The implementation of creativity across the curriculum is key to our school improvement plan. Whether in the arts or sciences, our staff has great power to innovate, take risks, and find new creative ways of approaching teaching and learning to engage, motivate and inspire our students with a love for learning. They can draw on the outstanding teaching and development opportunities in school as well as on a range of external partners, agencies, and professionals. We include a wide range of educational visits for every child in our school they take part in workshops, attend lectures, visit theatres, galleries, museums, and places of work as well as being offered opportunities abroad. Our international residencies have seen students visiting Rome with Latin, New York with Photography, Belgium with PE, and Geneva with Physics. All of these opportunities provide our students with new experiences to bring their learning alive. We offer a broad and balanced curriculum, which has been designed to offer every student the chance to achieve place great emphasis on creativity in the classroom and use creative approaches to stimulate learning, build confidence and raise the attainment of our students. We understand how different students learn and our teachers engage students by using a variety of teaching styles and appropriate challenges for all. To support the curriculum and enhance learning the school is equipped with excellent resources, including over 750 computers, a professional music studio, well-equipped science and technology classrooms, outstanding sports facilities, and media suites. Mental Health and well-being are increasingly a central consideration within the school and within the wider community. We have several different processes to help students who feel that they may need to talk to someone about their mental health or get support for someone they are concerned about. As a school, we take all aspects of a young person’s wellbeing seriously but we are first and foremost a school so as well as contacting us to let us know your concerns we strongly recommend that you contact your GP to discuss any concerns that you may have about your young person.
