  1. The Netherlands Inter-community School (NIS) is one of the oldest schools in Jakarta, celebrating 50 years of outstanding education in 2017. Starting with humble roots, the school traces its origins to an Indonesian teacher who would teach Dutch children in the back room of her home in Menteng. As the school’s reputation and student numbers continued to grow, a dedicated building was established in the annexes of the Philips Company on Jalan Proklamasi and NIS formally came into existence in 1967. The school expanded further thanks to the assistance of subsidies from the Dutch government and NIS was relocated to Slipi in 1972. In response to the needs of the expatriate community, the school moved once more to Cilandak, a suburb in Southern Jakarta before its final move to its current home in the leafy surrounds of Jalan Jeruk Perut. For almost 20 years the school has continued to grow and evolve, providing a world-class education to our students. Our amazing students are the lifeblood of our school. They embody the ambitious aspirations of NIS as curious, creative, and enthusiastic young people with an appetite for learning and a thirst for knowledge. We know that children who are happy and secure in their learning environment are children who are more likely to thrive and so we strive to ensure that every day matters for every child. We deliver a dynamic education to our young learners aged 18 Months -12 years old. We use a blended curriculum based on the British Curriculum and the International Primary Curriculum, which focuses on high expectations, key skills and knowledge, and understanding, as well as encouraging excellent attitudes to learn and metacognition. We also provide specialist programs for our Dutch students, leading to the Dutch National Tests. Our international educators are highly experienced and qualified and our excellent standards in learning and teaching create a curriculum that is relevant, rich, and rewarding. Through our strong extra-curricular program, children can try new experiences or build expertise across a sport, cultural, and performing arts program beyond the school day. NIS is an international school that exists at the heart of both the ex-pat and the local community in South Jakarta. Over 20 nationalities are represented on the student body, melded together into a diverse but single group. Our school is proud to have established and nurtured a welcoming environment, where parents are encouraged to be active participants in their child’s education. Many families walk or ride bikes into school and the campus acts as an important source of community and social hub, both for students and parents. Tea and coffee are available for parents each morning, along with freshly baked products from a local Dutch baker using imported flour.
