- We are a medium-sized primary school educating 4-11-year-olds located in Whitton. We pride ourselves on being a warm and friendly school and welcome a broad intake of children from Whitton and the surrounding areas. We currently have 500 children on roll and are proud to have a happy, diverse mix of cultures. We are expanding from a two-form entry school to a three-form entry school. We currently have three forms of entry in Reception to Year 4 and we are growing year on year. We are situated in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, close to Twickenham Rugby Stadium. Our school is on a spacious site in Nelson Road, a short distance from Whitton High Street. Our exceptionally large playing field is a tremendous asset providing the children with a pleasant, green, and open environment in which to learn and play. We are a busy and friendly school, with lots going on. This website aims to give you a taster of our school, as well as providing regularly updated information for both parents and pupils. We have a warm supportive ethos and children who are enthusiastic to learn from a wide range of learning challenges shared with them every day by experienced and committed staff. We aim to ensure that everyone who walks into our school community feels welcome and can participate in the exciting learning that takes place while enjoying our stimulating environments. We value everyone and enable them to achieve their full potential, developing their knowledge and skills to support them in their everyday life. Nelson school follows the guidelines of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames on all admissions procedures. Our current admission level is 30 pupils per class from Reception to Year 6. We are in the process of consulting with the Secretary of State to change the Published Admission Number (PAN) to 60 from September 2018. Children generally start school in Reception during the school year in which they become 5 years old, typically known as ‘rising 5s’. School begins for most of these children in September, at the start of the school year. Nelson currently admits 90 children into Reception, organized into 3 classes but is consulting on reducing the PAN to 60 from September 2018. Transfer from Nelson Nursery to Reception is not automatic. We also welcome children from a range of nursery schools, other settings, or from home. Some children join Nelson from other local schools, from schools elsewhere in the UK, or from overseas during the school year, all known as ‘in-year admissions. If a vacancy exists in any age group, then an offer can be made because oversubscription criteria such as siblings already in school or distance from the school do not apply. As a school, we are committed to providing a rich creative curriculum that prepares our pupils to be lifelong independent learners in the 21st Century. Our creative curriculum includes the National Curriculum core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science, Information, and Communication Technology (ICT) and Religious Education and the foundation subjects of Technology, Art, Geography, History, Music, and Physical Education (PE). Children are assessed regularly as to their progress in these subjects and these assessments provide accurate, accessible information about what pupils know, understand, and can do. We believe that partnerships with parents promote children’s learning. Working together we actively support children’s learning and development. Our partnership with parents provides an excellent education and an equal chance for all of our children. Together we support each child’s learning to help them achieve their best and to meet their unique needs. Together we positively promote the school in the local community. All children may experience some difficulties in learning from time to time during their school life. We aim to provide equal access to the whole curriculum for all children including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). All teaching staff is involved in the learning and development of pupils with SEND. Parents and carers are involved at all stages. The PE and sport premium is designed to help primary schools improve the quality of the PE and sports activities they offer to pupils. We believe that physical exercise not only improves health, reduces stress, and improves concentration, but also promotes correct physical growth and development. Exercise has a positive influence on academic achievement, emotional stability, and interaction with others. Through sport and other physical activities, our children will learn about their responsibilities both as individuals members of groups, and teams. On 20 July 2017, Nelson Mandela University has officially renamed: the only UniversityUniversity in the world to carry the name of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. With this name, we will be honoring Nelson Mandela by leading our UniversityUniversity into a new era of robust innovation and change. It is an era where our South African identity combines global self-assuredness with locally actualized philosophical approaches and practices applied to economies, environments, lifestyles, cultures, and traditions. It is an era of respect and sharing to advance our people's needs, lives, and aspirations. We assume the responsibility of standing up and saying what our UniversityUniversity is doing to improve society and change the world for the better, which Nelson Mandela dedicated his life to doing. "For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others." We are honored that the naming of our UniversityUniversity has the full support of Mandela's eldest grandson, Mandla Mandela, the head of the Mvezo Traditional Council and the custodian of the family. It is our unique privilege as a University to pay tribute to Nelson Mandela, a man who became the world's moral compass and one of the most outstanding leaders we have ever known. Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) opened on 1 January 2005, the result of the merging of the PE Technikon, the University of Port Elizabeth (UPE), and the Port Elizabeth campus of Vista University (Vista PE). This union of three very different institutions came about due to the government's countrywide restructuring of higher education – intended to deliver a more equitable and efficient system to meet the needs of South Africa in the 21st century. NMMU brings together the best traditions of technikon and university education and draws on more than a century of quality higher education in a new kind of UniversityUniversity that offers a wide range of academic, professional, and technological programs varying entrance and exit levels. NMMU has approximately 27 000 students and approximately 2 500 staff members, based on six campuses in the Nelson Mandela Metropole and George. The sites are the North Campus (former PE Technikon), South Campus (former UPE), Second Avenue Campus (former PE Technikon College Campus), Missionvale Campus (former Vista), Bird Street Campus, and the George Campus at Saasveld. The first Chancellor of NMMU was Chief Justice Pius Langa, and Justice Ronnie Pillay, the first Chairperson of Council. Dr. Rolf Stumpf was the first Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer of NMMU, succeeded on 1 January 2008 by Prof Derrick Swartz. The first step in the merger came with incorporating Vista PE by UPE on 2 January 2004, followed by the merger of PE Technikon and UPE on 1 January 2005. To offer a diverse range of quality educational opportunities that will make a critical and constructive contribution to regional, national, and global sustainability. To achieve our vision and mission, we will ensure that our values inform and define our institutional ethos and specific educational purpose and philosophy. We are committed to promoting equity of access and opportunities to give students the best chance of success in pursuing lifelong learning and diverse educational goals.
