  1. Murmansk State Technical University is one of the oldest higher education institutions on the Kola Peninsula. Its history began in 1950, and in the year 2010, the University celebrated the 60-the anniversary. MSTU was founded as Murmansk Higher Marine School, which had to provide the rapidly growing fishing fleet with the top-level staff. This was an extraordinary institution with no rivals in the USSR and the whole world, and we are very proud to be their successors. The name has been changed several times and finally transformed into Murmansk State Technical University, which is nowadays one of the biggest and most important educational centers in the High North of Russia. Being the Murmansk Region higher education leader, MSTU has six institutes, two faculties, and three universitywide departments training students in 28 areas. In a world where change is the norm, knowledge has become a critical resource that is highly needed in Russia and worldwide. Our main goal is to provide all industry sectors with highly-skilled employees valued both for their in-depth knowledge and their ability to study, communicate, and face challenges. Apart from the teaching activities, the University carries out very intensive research and unites students, Ph.D. students, lecturers, and researchers. This work is determined by the region's geographical position and its mineral resources. We are conducting scientific research in the oil and gas sphere, heat power engineering, microbiology, and biochemistry. Also, MSTU is supervised by the Federal Fisheries Agency, which makes combining university research and the fishing industry one of the critical tasks. International cooperation is also considered a critical area. MSTU has established close contacts with educational institutions and international funds from Scandinavia, the USA, France, Holland, Iceland, Poland, and Ukraine. The University develops joint study and research programs and values cooperation with the foreign companies Statoil and Total. There have been many changes during the last 60 years, but our goal has remained the same. MSTU is aimed at training professional fishing fleet personnel and competitive employees for the region's labor market. At the same time, we are very ambitious to become the regional training center to operate in the Arctic and produce its natural resources. Sixty years is the period of youth, development, and making new plans. We have gained good teaching experience and created technical facilities which give opportunities for rapid and steady progress. Murmansk State Technical University's mission is to shape and apply the up-to-date marine and technical education system to produce a highly qualified workforce for the Arctic territory's exploration and development. MSTU's strategic objectives are: To strive for innovative knowledge and technology to increase the national capacity in processing resources of the World Ocean, the Russian Arctic and to boost the competitiveness of the primary sectors of the regional economy To conduct basic and applied research within priority areas hand in hand with the study process To address urgent social and economic challenges of the state and region To develop international cooperation in the areas of expertise To accumulate, preserve and enhance civil, cultural, and scientific values among the university students so that they could develop their ability to succeed in the modern democratic society Education and Research Priorities: Marine education (nautical studies) Marine recourses (hydrobionts) Environment protection and safety Food technology and safety (fish processing) Oil and gas fields development Energy and power engineering MSTU priority research areas are focused on the Arctic. Integration of university education and research activities provides a sound basis for preparing specialists to work at enterprises and scientists. MSTU has a severe scientific background in 9 areas of Arctic research, such as: Navigation safety and efficiency, search and rescue, emergency prevention at sea in the Arctic region Study of geophysical processes in the Arctic Exploration and use of biotechnology-based on biological resources Innovative technology development and reproduction of aquatic biological resources in the Arctic region The technology of food products from vegetable and animal raw materials in the Arctic region Innovative technologies of onshore and offshore mineral resources production in the Arctic Environmental economics of the Arctic region and regional economy Resource - and energy-saving technologies in the Arctic Ecology, environmental protection, and technosphere safety in the Arctic region.
