Morningside is a 3-11 two-form entry primary school with a Children’s Centre. The community is culturally and ethnically diverse and we pride ourselves on being an inclusive school. We have 2 classes in each year group with 30 pupils in each class. We have 2 Nursery classes, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The school will admit 38 children to the Nursery class each year. Priority will be given to children in public care. The places will be broken down into two categories. 19 places will be allocated to the AM slot, and 19 places will be allocated to the PM slot. We will need to get confirmation from Children Social Care for priorities 1 and 2. Also if we need a tie-breaker decision for priorities 1, 2, and 4, we will use distance, as measured in item 5 above. If two applicants live the same distance from the school, the place with being allocated by lottery. This will be carried out by the Admissions Team in the presence of an independent witness. If a family lives on a boat, the distance will be measured from an authorized mooring point. If the family is traveling from place to place, the nearest mooring point with being used on the closing date for the receipt of applications. Children across the school are taught net games i.e basketball, netball, and football alongside dance, gymnastics, and yoga. In the summer, they focus on fitness and athletics as well as games such as rounders and cricket. The skill focus changes across the year groups to ensure progression as they go up the school. Children also have the opportunity to learn how to swim. When we work out distances, we use geographical information provided by the local council. If several addresses have the same geographical property reference (such as a block of flats), or if several applicants are living the same distance away from the school, the allocation of a place will be decided by the lottery. Where parental responsibilities are equally shared, we will consider the home address to be the place where the child sleeps, and spends most of their time, from Monday to Friday. Normally this will be with the parent/carer who receives Child Benefit for that child. The internet hosts many exciting opportunities for education. The online world is a wonderful place for young people to explore, with unprecedented opportunities for learning and creativity, but just like the real world there are risks and dangers they should be aware of and which we should all act to protect them from. At Morningside, we encourage the use of technology as an important part of our students’ development but always want them to spend their time online safely. In school, we have an internet safety code of conduct that all pupils and staff are expected to adhere to. We have strong and constantly updated filters in place to protect and govern internet use. ‘The Morningside Web Outlaws!’ provide interesting characters which show children many of the real risks and dangers they could find online and what steps to take to keep themselves safe. E-safety is an important part of each computing lesson from Year 1 to Year 6 and children learn about a range of issues such as keeping personal information private and cyberbullying. Children in the Early Years learn about e-safety through stories and other relevant media. Morningside celebrates Safer Internet Day each year which focuses on children thinking about their role in creating a safer internet community for everyone. We are a group of schools working together because we believe our schools can gain many benefits from working collaboratively. We have committed to a shared responsibility to the wider school community, the provision of good quality education, and the improvement of life chances for pupils in the community beyond that of our schools. Teachers, support staff, school leaders, and Governors have added expertise in working alongside colleagues to improve provision and outcomes for pupils. The Morningside school council has the important job of seeking the views of all pupils and sharing them with the adults in school. They make sure that everyone’s voice is heard. They hold a class council meeting, every fortnight, where the feedback from the previous school council and then ask for feedback and areas for discussion. The individuals in each class can add to this agenda and the councilors make sure that everyone has a turn. During the intervening weeks, the school council meets with Janet to discuss the ideas and input from their class. The Pupil Premium is an additional amount of money given to schools, on top of their main budget. Every school receives a fixed amount of money per pupil for all pupils meeting certain criteria. The main criterion is eligibility for free school meals at any given point within the last 6 years or those children who have been cared for by the Local Authority for at least 6 months. The money is provided to schools so that we can raise attainment and progress for this group of pupils. Physical Education is taught across the school by specialist coaches from BADU Sports. Through the use of coaches, we hope children can increase their knowledge regarding the rules of sports, the importance of teamwork, and how fitness affects the body.
