During the THM Orientation Days for exchange students, we will guide you through enrolling at THM. You will have the initial contact with your THM departmental coordinator and help you become acquainted with Giessen's student life. We urgently recommend that you arrive and install yourself in Giessen before the event starts so that you can attend all of the Orientation Days events. We appreciate your interest in doing your semester abroad at THM. Here you find what you have to do when preparing your stay in Giessen/Friedberg. You can apply for an exchange semester at THM if your home institution is one of our partner institutions. Here is a list of our partner institutions. We strongly recommend that international students purchase statutory student health insurance from a German insurance company after they arrive in Germany. Premiums for all statutory health insurance policies for students amount to approx. Eighty euros a month (including payments for nursing care insurance), assuming the student is under 30 and has been an enrolled student no longer than seven years (14 semesters). Health insurance from private companies is also available. For numerous reasons, however, we recommend that students purchase statutory health insurance. You can find out more about health insurance by talking to us during our office hours. As a rule, you can no longer have statutory health insurance at student rates after your 30th birthday or after your seventh year (14th semester) enrolled as a student. However, you can retain your insurance at a higher premium rate. If you are considering changing over to a private health insurance plan due to the higher premiums, we would recommend that you contact the Giessen Student Services Organisation's 'Advice on Social Affairs' for advice. The International Buddy Programme (IBP) is a service offered by the THM's International Office. The program aims to promote intercultural relationships and help new international students get off to a good start at THM and their surroundings. Each semester a new international student (called a "newcomer") and a THM student (called an "oldie") are put together to form a buddy team. When putting buddy teams together, both the relevant degree modules and all participants' interests are considered. In spending time together during the semester, the buddies in a team support each other. Buddies are students at THM and international students taking German classes in preparation for their degree course who are looking for intercultural encounters and are interested in intercultural exchange. After you have submitted your registration, you will be assigned a buddy from your department or degree course. When putting teams together, the program director and student tutors take both degree subjects and individual interests, hobbies, and language proficiency into consideration. After a buddy has been found for you, you should take the initiative and introduce yourself via email or WhatsApp. If you have not contacted your buddy within three weeks, please contact the Buddy Programme director. The International Career Centre offers international students at THM a comprehensive program that aims to help them prepare for their career starts in Germany. We begin with general information on looking for jobs and career starts in Germany (such as the general legal framework). This is followed by sessions on German companies' application procedures (written CVs submitted by post and online, job interviews). We will go on field trips to become acquainted with companies and employers in the region and their HR departments, and the recruiting procedures used. The International Career Centre also provides information on career fairs held in the region, such as the "Karriere Weltweit" (Career Worldwide) to be held on 6 December 2017 in the Kongresshalle in Giessen, where we will also have a booth.
