Betty Layward is a unique and welcoming two-form entry school where we believe that every child has the right to reach their potential. We understand that as the world is ever-changing potential will blossom if children are prepared for life with the skills to advance, adapt and grow. Our duty as a school is to inspire, develop and nurture every child to have the confidence to learn. We believe that no child should be left behind. At Betty Layward we know that children learn best when they feel valued, cared for and are given a variety of opportunities to express themselves creatively. At Betty Layward we believe that potential is not just limited to academic success. We actively promote an environment where each child achieves their full potential through a creative, broad, and enriched curriculum that promotes a love of learning. Art, Sport, Music, and Drama are core elements of our curriculum and we strive to ensure that they continue to be valued. We believe that the education of our children is a shared responsibility between home and school. We work in close partnership with families to ensure that our children have a positive and rewarding journey throughout their time at Betty Layward. We actively encourage parental involvement in our school through volunteering and school trips and our active PTFA. We also run various workshops for parents throughout the academic year. This helps to create an environment where the children feel happy, confident, and secure. Our students enjoy rich and diverse curriculum content across history and geography at Betty Layward. Each half-term students will have a topic of study, ranging from ‘Discovery’ in Year 1 that focuses on important discoveries across history and the people involved to ‘Food, Glorious Food!’ in Year 5 that explores the journey of food from farm to plate to ‘World War II’ in Year 6 that delves into the history of World War II, the evacuees and the Battle of Britain. Each half-term there is a dedicated ‘WOW Day’ that focuses entirely on the class topic through a range of engaging and interactive activities. Students have a real chance to show their creative and curious sides through our creative curriculum. At Betty Layward we aim to create a happy, creative school where the atmosphere is conducive to learning. We believe that children learn in many different ways so we provide opportunities for them to explore, create, research, and investigate. They must find out for themselves rather than being told. We believe that every child should learn the skills for lifelong learning and be supported to develop as good citizens who contribute fully to their community. We also believe that for children to reach their full potential, we need to work in partnership with parents and carers. There are now approximately 460 children on roll at Betty Layward and each class has 30 children. Two part-time Nursery classes are offering up to 50 part-time places. The school also offers a range of extended services to parents, including a breakfast club, a range of after-school activities, and an after-school club. At The Betty Layward Primary School, we believe that: Pupils who participate in extra activities do better academically, have more positive attitudes to learning, and attend school more often. There is considerable evidence nationally that a range of aspects of extended school provision can lead to improvements in pupil achievement, engagement in learning, and self-esteem, narrowing the gap in particular for some of our most vulnerable pupils. Extended schools are therefore a high priority to develop at Betty Layward and to plan for the vision for the future. Children can start Nursery class the term after they reach their third birthday. The age they can start depends on how many places are available. The Nursery runs part-time morning and afternoon sessions. Please complete a Nursery application form, available from the school office, when your child is two years old. The school will then write to you the term before your child is due to start, to let you know if you have been offered a place. All members of the Betty Layward Primary School community believe that safeguarding and student welfare are the highest priority and work together to ensure that all measures are taken to ensure the safety of our students daily. Our school promotes a rich and diverse learning experience for all students and our staff and governors work hard to ensure the needs of each student are met and cared for. The school has established a set of agreed principles to determine its SEND Policy. We recognize children and staff as individuals with their unique personalities and abilities. We will meet the school community’s educational, social, emotional, and physical needs by creating an environment that encourages and stimulates the development of everyone’s full potential. The Department for Education (DfE) is spending over £450 million on improving physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools over the 3 academic years. The funding was first issued for the academic year 2013/2014 and it will continue over the academic years 2014/2015, 2015/2016, and 2016/2017. The funding will be allocated directly to primary schools to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all pupils. Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision for PE and sport, but schools have been given the freedom to choose how they do this. View full school
