The University was founded in 1970 based on the Kalmyk pedagogical Institute. The construction of the complex of buildings started in 1971. The first graduation of students took place in 1975. In 1991 there were created: Interdisciplinary center for retraining and advanced training of specialists of the national economy. Post-graduate studies. The center of revival and development of the Kalmyk language and literature was established in 1992. In 2000, Kalmyk State University was awarded the President of the Republic of Kalmykia, connected with the University's 30th anniversary. The University consists of 10 faculties and the Institute of Kalmyk Philology and Oriental studies. Students' training is carried out in 22 specialties of higher professional education, 20 bachelor's degrees, 13 master's degrees, and 18 vocational secondary education. Form of education — full-time and part-time. Currently, on full-time enrollment, there are 1878 bachelors, specialists 1618, 213 graduate program for vocational education — 615, Baranchinskiy in College — 492, 75 graduate students, 12 doctoral students. Correspondence — 1183 bachelor, specialist 2048, 31 graduate students, Baranchinskiy the College, and secondary vocational education are trained, respectively, 312 and 258 students. In the end, today in KalmSU are trained around 9000 students. Kalmyk State University established itself as a leading choice in the system of training and retraining of specialists for various sectors of the economy, the integration of University and academic science, and the revival of the Kalmyk language culture. KalmSU has seven educational buildings in Elista, Baranchinskiy College (branch). The University has 12 scientific-educational centers, a scientific library, laboratories for research. Kalmyk State University is the venue for scientific conferences, international and national conferences on a wide range of issues, devoted to environmental protection, humanitarian studies, higher and secondary formations of Mongolian studies and Oriental studies, ethnological, Buddhist culture and repressed peoples. Kalmyk State University actively cooperates with leading Universities of Asia, Europe, and America. KalmSU — organizer and active member of the International Association of State Universities of Caspian countries, which has 46 universities and research institutes in Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Iran.
