- St. Hugh's School owes its origin to the Forbes family who founded it in 1925, and it was due to their energy and vision that the school has been able to expand in the last eighty years. St. Hugh's, administered by a forward-thinking Governing Body, became a Charitable Trust in 1962 and has continued to prosper over the years. We are very proud that we are a truly independent prep school, preparing children for a wide range of senior schools for transfer at both eleven and thirteen. Over the years many hundreds of children have attended St. Hugh's from within Lincolnshire and beyond. For some current pupils, they represent the third generation of their family attending the 'family' of St. Hugh's. The school is the oldest independent school in the county and continues to be an extremely successful prep school. In 1945 it moved to its new home at Carswell Manor, a fine Jacobean country house with extensive, attractive grounds. The school proudly bears the name of Hugh of Avalon, Bishop of Lincoln from 1156 to 1200. It is in membership of the Incorporated Association of Preparatory Schools and is administered as a charitable educational trust by a Board of Governors. For many years St Hugh's was solely a boys' full boarding school. Since 1977 we have been co-educational and we see this as a key element in the family atmosphere which pervades St Hugh's and which enables our children to grow up in an environment where courtesy and consideration for others are paramount. St Hugh's aims to provide a secure, happy environment, promoting the emotional wellbeing and mental health of all pupils and enabling them to gain confidence. To develop a moral and spiritual awareness in pupils and to lead them to value themselves and others. To give a sound academic foundation, to foster a positive work ethic, and to encourage pupils to think for themselves and to become independent learners. To instill a desire to participate in a wide range of activities and to contribute to the community. To encourage a readiness to tackle new tasks and to accept challenges without fear of failure.
