Hoosac School was founded in Hoosick, New York, in 1889. For over 130 years, Hoosac has been enrolling boarders and day students in Forms II-VI (Grades 8-12) and our postgraduate program. As a coeducational, college preparatory school, Hoosac celebrates each student's individuality in all aspects of their academic life. The school has over 75 courses and an incredible 7:1 student-to-teacher ratio. Hoosac School, rich with tradition, builds a strong sense of community through small class sizes, on and off-campus activities, and our annual yule log celebration. Hoosac School has a long history of educating young minds to prepare them for the next stage of their academic careers. Hoosac School was founded as an Episcopal church school in 1889 by Dr. Edward Dudley Tibbits on land owned by his family. There were 19 students enrolled at Hoosac that year, with VI Formers graduating in 1890. For over 130 years, Hoosac has maintained and upheld Dr. Tibbits's core beliefs about a well-rounded boarding school experience - to educate the whole student, academically, athletically, socially as well as spiritually. Hoosac's mission is to develop enthusiastic learners with creative minds and strong moral compasses ready to handle college and life with intelligence and grace. Additionally, most of our teachers live on campus and are available in the evenings for extra help or just some conversation. We adhere to the principles of Mastery Teaching, which fosters critical thinking skills in our Hoosac students. From morning until evening, they are encouraged to ask questions, make connections between the topics they learn in their classes, and go as far as they can intellectually. As one of the top boarding high schools in New York, we want every person who attends Hoosac to leave with a greater understanding of the world and their place in it. Some students are driven by competing on sports teams; others are interested in staying fit and healthy without the rigors of being in a competitive environment. At Hoosac, we have all kinds of athletic choices for our young men and women. For those interested in competing at elite levels, Hoosac is part of the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council, which provides athletes with exposure to top northeastern colleges and universities.
