      1. Holton is a vibrant place where girls are deeply engaged in the process of learning, and since they are both challenged and nurtured, they develop self-confidence, self-esteem, and a sense of competence. Holton-Arms School cultivates young women's unique potential through the "education not only of the mind but of the soul and spirit." Founded in 1901, Holton-Arms is a college-preparatory school for girls grades 3-12 dedicated to the "education not only of the mind but of the soul and spirit.*" The School provides rigorous and dynamic programs in the traditional academic areas, the fine and performing arts, and athletics. Here, young women of diverse backgrounds can take risks, learn from mistakes, pursue leadership opportunities, and build lifelong friendships. Holton-Arms is a vibrant community that values consistency and order as well as creativity and freedom. We seek to develop personal integrity and a sense of responsibility that helps young women make wise and ethical choices. We work to build the values of respect, compassion, and service to others within the School and in local, national, and global communities. We believe that with intellectual curiosity, self-reliance, the tenacity of purpose, and commitment to others, Holton women will make a difference in a complex and changing world. We are proud to be one of the only schools in the Washington, D.C. area with nearly 40% cultural diversity. Of course, culture is not the only way in which we measure diversity. A diverse community provides a diversity of thought, identity, and experience that stimulates new ways of thinking. It actively demonstrates respect for differences, moral courage, and appreciation for common ground. The high academic standards for which Holton-Arms School is known today were set during those first years at 2125 S Street, NW, Washington, DC. Small classes were maintained to afford a maximum amount of individual attention to each student. Only the most qualified teachers were invited to join a faculty dedicated to the education of youth. Today, over a hundred years since its founding, Holton-Arms appears to be quite different from the School on Hillyer Place, yet it is the same in many ways. The School continues to maintain a high academic standard. It is a place for personal involvement, a place where parents support the School by helping out in the library, on field trips, on committees of the Board, and at special functions, and a place where outstanding faculty continue to give maximum attention to individual students.
