At Holmleigh we aim to provide a broad and exciting curriculum enriched by an extensive program of educational visits and projects in school. We also maintain a commitment to raising money for charities. Our regular theme days provide a memorable context for the children’s learning. Holmleigh School will create an environment that is challenging and supportive to all pupils and staff and welcoming to parents and other members of the community. Holmleigh will provide all the children in the school with an efficient, quality education service that will enable them to achieve their full academic, creative and social potential. In October each year parents are invited to meet with the Head Teacher to discuss options for their child’s secondary education and to make an online application. Most of our children opt for Hackney secondary schools, whilst a few decide to apply in other boroughs. Results of applications are sent out in Feb/March the next year. When you walk around our school, you will find displays all around you, be it corridors or ceilings. Our displays reflect our children’s achievements, celebrations of many kinds, and of course work that they have carried out in their class. Below, you will find a selection of displays currently around the school from Nursery to Year 6. Needless to say, these displays are ever changing and when you visit us you might find different displays around. The school has a full complement of governors who meet regularly to discuss and inform the work of the school. They include parent governors who are elected by parents to represent their views. Governors make regular visits to the school to report on activities, and they participate in special events alongside staff, parents, and children. David Stranger-Jones and Karima Singh are our new Parent Governors. If you have any ideas or suggestions or want to speak to them, they are often around the school at either drop-off or pick up so just ask them for a chat. Their Internet is a great source of information. Nowadays internet can be accessed via a wide choice of devices including PSPs, DS, Wii, smartphones – pretty much any electronic device. So the advice to the parents to keep the computer in the living area in the house and limit children use is no longer a practical one. Instead, we need to educate ourselves and our children on how to be kept safe and what to do if in doubt. We expect all our pupils to adhere to Pupil Acceptable Use Agreement / e-Safety Rules. A copy of this is attached at the bottom of this document. Please read this with your child so that we have your full support for safe and secure use of ICT throughout the school. Children will normally be admitted to the nursery during the term following their third birthday. Application forms for a place in the nursery can be obtained from the school office. Please note that a place in the nursery does not guarantee a place in the Reception class. At the beginning of the year, each child is allocated a key worker and will have a different settling-in period depending if they had attended Holmleigh Primary School Nursery or not. Please read the booklet to find out more. Year one is the beginning of a new stage, hence is marked as KS1 (Key Stage 1). It is the beginning of more formal education and for some children, it can take a little longer to adjust than others. We work closely with Foundation Stage (Reception Class) and try to make the transition from Reception to year one as smooth as we can. One of how we ensure this is happening is that we hold a “transition meeting” with parents of children in Reception towards the end of the year. Although we are a small school and most children know most of the teachers, we still feel it helps children to pay a ‘visit’ to their next classroom and meet their new teacher. We have a handover meeting with Reception class teachers and Year Two teachers. We have the Foundation Profile assessments to find out about your child’s academic and personal achievements. We provide several after-school clubs both for KS1 and KS2 pupils. Places are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. From now on school clubs will be by subscription only, charged at £20 per term payable in advance. The only exception will be clubs run at no cost by volunteers. (At present Chess Club is the only club in this category). This is because the school can no longer afford to subsidize after-school activities. Enrolment can be done either in person at the school office, or by completing the form below and enclosing cash or cheque made out to Holmleigh Primary School, for the appropriate amount. Year two is the end of Key Stage 2 and is when children take their SAT exams. We try to make this experience as stress-free as possible.
