- These words of our founder are a befitting introduction to The Hewitt School. Present at our school's founding in 1920, Hewitt's commitment to deep humanity and mutual respect remain undiminished today. At Hewitt, we believe that the key to a meaningful life is meaningful relationships with people and ideas over time. Hewitt girls and young women are impressive beyond words and achieve truly great things—from national academic awards to acceptance at some of the world's most prestigious colleges and universities. Our curriculum, rigorous and challenging, is guided by the belief that the harder an accomplishment is, the greater the feeling of reward for having accomplished it. But at Hewitt, achievement, accolades, and a great resume are, in and of themselves, insufficient end goals. Hewitt girls make original and sound contributions to society because they have been empowered to compose narratives for themselves. Hewitt's pedagogy of presence champions mindful interactions between students, teachers, ideas, and diverse vantage points. Teachers make explicit the connection between self-awareness and learning. At Hewitt, teaching and learning are profound acts of presence because teachers and students genuinely listen and talk with one another, because they value reflection and embrace the process of learning, and because they change and are changed by the alchemy that happens in a school where the "touch of life upon life" is at the center of daily life. A student who has been taught to respect disparate perspectives has also been trained to explore alternate theories, solutions, and answers. And a girl who has embraced many competing worldviews becomes a young woman well prepared to engage with a diverse and complex world. Empathy, a core value in every division, enables our students to maintain a point of view that is not narrowed by the limits of personal experience but expansive because of the ability to make a deep connection to others' stories. Research reveals that girls who feel known and valued through trial and triumph learn more enthusiastically, think more adventurously, and grow into young women who thrive in college, career, and life itself. Hewitt faculty are trained to design curriculum and implement a pedagogy that explicitly fosters a growth mindset in cooperative, collaborative, and relevant classrooms to young women. Hewitt's raison d 'être guides girls to become young women of purpose—a meaningful purpose to the self and of meaningful, beneficial consequence to the larger community. Taught to chase dreams rather than credentials, Hewitt students come to know who they are and learn to construct a vision for the journey ahead, long before they choose their majors or careers. Because our girls develop a perspective and worldview wise beyond their years, they leave Hewitt with a sense of both possibility and direction that is far from "mission accomplished." At Hewitt, we know that girls and young women learn best from highly respected teachers who feel a genuine connection. We also know that the best teachers are themselves meaningfully attuned to every student's spirit. Hewitt faculty cultivate the practice of patience and model contemplation as part of intellectual exploration and create class environments that intentionally vary the pace during the day to ensure everyone has time to think, talk, connect, and rest honestly. Through such intentionally designed daily interactions with their teachers and one another, Hewitt girls and young women are seen, valued, and cherished for who they uniquely are. Understanding that a rich and challenging program extends beyond the classroom, Hewitt offers abundant opportunities for students to develop their sense of purpose and passion. Supported by their teachers and classmates, Hewitt girls act with confidence and empathy as they step outside of their comfort zones and embrace new opportunities to learn and grow. Hewitt students participate in multiple service initiatives each year. As part of their Hewitt education, students learn to research, advocate, and act to better their community and the world, becoming socially aware members of local and global communities. The emphasis on student-centered, experiential learning in lower and middle school classrooms fosters a mindset that blossoms in the upper school into a full-fledged Experiential Initiatives program, which takes Hewitt young women beyond the walls of Hewitt. The program allows students to take a deep dive into a particular area of interest through an experience that is practical and hands-on. Such experiences are vital in guiding young women in cultivating a sense of purpose. View full school
