We are a primary school and nursery for nearly 700 pupils aged 3 to 11 that opened in September 2009. Our school was judged to be ‘outstanding’ by OFSTED in 2010 and again in 2014. Our staff team continuously strives to find engaging and innovative ways to help our children learn and develop as individuals. We build close partnerships with families and celebrate success together. Our school is a strong family where expectations are high, values are positive, forgiveness is abundant and children are treasured. We believe that anyone can learn anything and the growth mindset underpins everything we do. We are in a federation with Whitefriars School and we are expanding there so we can offer specialist subject teaching to primary pupils from both our schools as well as an outstanding secondary and sixth form education! Our schools are both converter academies in a thriving multi-school trust. Building on our success as a CPD center and Teaching School, in September 2014 we launched the Heathland Learning Trust, offering courses, workshops, and consultancy to colleagues in other schools. We aim to: Develop pupils’ understanding of what Values are and why they are important in life. Encourage children to refer to the school’s shared Values when making choices. Use the Values of the school when solving conflict situations. Exemplify the school’s shared Values in our own choices. Display and share our school Values and encourage all visitors to take account of them in their time in the school. Our curriculum is based on academic subjects taught by highly qualified staff in specialist accommodation. From Year 7, pupils are placed in teaching sets according to their ability in each subject except Art, Drama, Music, Religious Education and Physical Education. In the latter subjects, pupils are taught in Tutor Groups until Year 8. Homework is an integral part of pupils’ learning and pupils in all Years receive regular homework set according to a homework timetable. All pupils study ICT and Religious Education to GCSE standard and the majority also study a modern foreign language and a technology subject to GCSE. All pupils are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities and are given opportunities to take on additional roles and responsibilities. Older students have further opportunities which include mentoring, volunteering, leading extra-curricular activities, and acting as positive ambassadors for the school, within their tutor group and year group.
