Heald Place Primary School aims to create and maintain a safe learning environment where all children and adults feel safe, secure, and valued and know they will be listened to and taken seriously. Our school is committed to the principles outlined in ‘Working Together to Safeguard Children 2015’ and implements policies, practices, and procedures which promote safeguarding and the emotional and physical well-being of children, young people, and staff. The school is committed to supporting the delivery of effective early help through multi-agency working, a consistent application of the thresholds, and the use of a single agency assessment. The Early Help assessment model is embedded into everyday practice and procedures when responding to children’s needs and signposts children and families to appropriate preventative services. The children have access to appropriate curriculum opportunities, including emotional health and well-being, to support the development of the skills needed to help them stay safe and healthy, develop their self-esteem and understand the responsibilities of adult life, particularly regarding child care and parenting skills. All children have access to an appropriate curriculum that is broad and balanced and differentiated to meet their needs. This enables them to learn to develop the necessary skills to build self-esteem, respect others, defend those in need, resolve conflict without resorting to violence, question, and challenge and make informed choices in later life. Children and young people are encouraged to express and discuss their ideas, thoughts, and feelings through a variety of activities and have access to a range of cultural opportunities which promote the fundamental British values of tolerance, respect, understanding, and empathy for others. There is access to a range of extracurricular activities, information, and materials from a diversity of sources which not only promotes these values but supports the social, spiritual, moral well-being, and physical and mental health of the pupils. Heald Place is a large inner-city Primary School. We are a warm, welcoming school, which is committed to the welfare and pastoral care of its’ pupils. The staff aims to bring out the best in each child and have high expectations of achievement and behavior. The school’s percentage of disadvantaged pupils is in the bottom 20% of schools. The percentage of pupils receiving Free School Meals is 42.5%. The percentage of pupils that have English as an Additional Language (EAL) is 89% and over 30 languages are spoken. Presently, the percentage for pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) is above the National Average at 16% (DfE, 2017) a high proportion of these pupils have a combination of needs, and many have Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs alongside Communication and Interaction (CI). The percentage of pupils with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) is below the National Average of 2.8% (DfE, 2017) and is currently 1%. At Heald Place, we believe that every pupil is a confident learner and that all pupils have an equal right to a full and rounded education that will enable them to achieve their full potential. Provision for pupils with special educational needs is a matter for the whole school. The Governing Body, the Head Teacher, the SENDCo, Class Teacher, and the Teaching Assistants, have important day-to-day responsibilities in identifying and providing educational support for the pupils who have to SEND in our school.
