The Harokopio University of Athens is a public university dedicated to promoting research and learning in a small, well-focused set of intellectual areas. The University, situated in the center of Athens and close to the Unesco World Heritage Centre of the Acropolis, originates from an educational institution that was first established in 1929 and gained the status of University in 1990. It takes its name from the national benefactor Panagis Harokopos. The University's excellent campus facilities house four academic departments, the central administration, the library, the IT center, and student advisory services. The Harokopio University of Athens is located close to many important cultural sites of interest, such as the Acropolis Museum, Thissio, Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaron), Keramikos, and the Benaki Museum. The main premises of the University are located at 70 Eleftheriou Venizelou Avenue Kallithea. The main building complex is located within a tree-lined urban property of twenty acres and includes: The main building, which was renovated and restored during 1993-1994. Today, it includes classrooms, the main auditorium, laboratories, and all the University's administrative departments. The construction of this building was materialized during 1915-1920, while in 1959, a new wing was added. From 1929 to 1990, this building housed the old "Harokopios Higher Education School." In 2000, the University's infrastructure was completed by constructing a new modern building, including the Library and Information Centre, the ceremony hall, fully equipped laboratories, classrooms, and professors' offices, mainly of the Department of Geography. Additionally, the needs of the University are covered by one more building, located a short distance from the main premises. It is located at 89 Harokopou Street and houses laboratories, classrooms, and professors' offices. In 2011 a new building was completed in Tavros's area for the newly established Department of Informatics and Telematics and the University's Refractory. The activities of Harokopio University Student Affairs' department relate to the following issues: Ensure handling procedures related to the feeding of students Ensure handling procedures related to the granting of student housing benefit Ensure the collection, publication, and distribution of class notes Ensure the collection of approved applications from the Departments for granting student loans, which are transmitted by the Ministry of Education Issuing and administering health booklet Monitoring the implementation of Senate decisions, Acad.
