- Hafodwenog is an area school, opened in 1972 to serve the children of Alma, Bryn Iwan, Cilrhedyn, Dinas, Gelliwen, Pandy, Penybont, Tagalog, and Trelech. The school has been planned in four units surround the school hall. Two units comprise of classrooms Foundation Phase learning area and Junior learning area. There are a further two units, one consisting of the staff area and the second where the Kitchen and school meals are prepared and served. Welsh is the official language of the school. It is the only medium of instruction in the Foundation Phase. English is introduced at Key Stage 2. To fulfill the Education Authority’s bilingual policy teaching resources of a high standard are provided to ensure that pupils can express themselves fluently and easily, verbally and in writing, in Welsh and English by the time they transfer to secondary education. Children can begin school at the beginning of the term before they reach their fourth birthday and receive full-time education. " As a school we will endeavor to develop an exciting, learning environment with a Welsh, nurturing ethos for the whole school community, to develop children's self-belief and self-respect, ensuring that opportunities are provided for every individual to reach their full potential." At Ysgol Hafodwenog the children are encouraged to follow the star! The star has 7 points and at the end of each point is a word that relates to school rules or which will help our school community to be a better place. These are the words on each point of the star: In conjunction with this, both classes have traffic lights on the back of the classroom door. All the children's names are on the green at the start of each day, however, if they misbehave in class or outside the classroom their name is moved onto the orange and then the red. The children are firstly given a warning and if they still behave inappropriately they are placed on the next color. There is also a Children's Assembly which is held on a Friday afternoon. Where children are encouraged to discuss different talk topics each week. Stars are also given to pupils if they have achieved something special or followed one of the points [words] on the star exceptionally well. We do encourage the children to give their opinion about the school and the rules which they are asked to follow. This is done through the school council.
