        Grier School

Grier School, a girls' college-preparatory day and boarding school for students in grades 7-12, offers an individualized education in academics, dance, riding, music, the visual arts, theatre, and a great variety of recreational and team sports. The Grier School is committed to the philosophy that each of our students should have the opportunity to achieve her potential. Our goal is to provide a warm, residential, home-like atmosphere where students from many nations and academic backgrounds gain knowledge, creative expression, responsibility, self-esteem, and leadership skills. The enthusiasm the students show toward achieving academic success, community spirit and global awareness is fantastic. Our young women are very involved and still strive to try new adventures to make the most of their high school experience. At Grier, girls become emboldened, engaged, and poised for the future. Lemuel Grier, the first in our founding family, conveyed this sentiment best: "Our aim is not to stuff the mind with undigested knowledge from the Text Book, but to train its powers, so that the student may be able to think for herself." Moreover, our students develop the confidence to move forward in their lives while maintaining lasting ties to the friendships and memories made at Grier. Our 300 female students are free to explore new opportunities and possibilities in a supportive, encouraging environment. Girls are encouraged to try new paths, to follow ambitions, and to pursue leadership roles. In finding her voice and comprehending her value, Grier's student comes to recognize the power and potential of being a girl in the 21st century. At Grier, girls become emboldened, engaged, and poised for the future. Grier girls are challenged in the classroom and find support from teachers and peers to develop academic perseverance. Also, Grier students develop critical thinking and communication skills that empower each girl to step forward, speak out, and get involved. Students find a wide variety in the Grier curriculum, which offers classes ranging from college preparatory to Advanced Placement (AP) and in-depth scholarship through electives and advanced offerings. At Grier, small classes, passionate teachers, and hands-on experiences involve students and immerse them in a culture of achievement. The standards of faculty and instructors are high, as are the levels of concern and support provided to ensure that students experience success. Technology is a powerful instructional medium and an essential part of every student's education. At Grier, students use technology to supplement instruction from teachers and to explore new areas of information. By encouraging independent use, we help develop the attitude that technology is a tool for learning available to all students and under their control. As students learn to use technology, they gain confidence in thinking and learning, a primary educational goal. Every student must bring her laptop and use it through her Grier education via a Virtual Desktop program that provides access to the required educational software. Because students and teachers use technology in their everyday learning, Grier provides high-quality classroom technology equipment and campus-wide high-speed internet access over a wireless and hard-wired network. The Technology Department aims to incorporate technology skills into many courses at all grade levels while also offering technology-specific courses, such as Computer Science I, AP Computer Science Principles, and 3D Design and Printing.
