      1. Greenhills was created in the late 1960s by a small group of Ann Arbor parents who saw a need for an independent, non-denominational, academically rigorous college preparatory day school in the community. Greenhills faculty remain 100% committed to developing personal relationships with students to make sure they are equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to make a positive difference, no matter what their path in life. For more than 50 years, Greenhills has maintained its steady focus on nurturing and educating curious, creative, and responsible citizens. Students and faculty work together to create an environment where students and teachers know each other as more than a name on a classroom door or a line or two in a grade book and cooperate to help our students realize their full potential in preparation for college – and beyond. We are a community dedicated to helping our students reach their full potential in the classroom, on the stage, on the field -- and in the world beyond the classroom. We hope you will spend a few minutes learning more about the opportunities for growth our students enjoy and how we bring alive our mission of shaping "curious, creative, and responsible citizens who respect all individuals and their differences, and whose meaningful and balanced lives will better the world." Greenhills School is a student-centered community that helps young people realize their full intellectual, ethical, artistic, and athletic potential in preparation for college — and beyond — as curious, creative, and responsible citizens who respect all individuals and their differences, and whose meaningful and balanced lives will better the world. The promotion of diversity is essential to the ethos and practices of Greenhills School. We believe that people from all races, cultures, socio-economic backgrounds, genders, abilities, religions, and sexualities are sources of strength that enrich teaching and learning. We strive to build a diverse learning community by actively valuing individual experiences, ideas, and talents. Greenhills prides itself on being a place where students are "triple threats": where, during their Greenhills careers, students will likely take a challenging course load, play a competitive sport or perform on stage, and provide meaningful service in support of the community. Our students explore opportunities they might not otherwise try and are supported in their efforts to succeed. We design our curriculum to challenge a broad range of students from grades six to 12. Advanced courses, off-campus field trips, and community service activities present growth and education opportunities in different ways. Our middle and upper schools are located in the same building. Students develop friendships and mentoring relationships through programs like middle school math tutoring, in which upper school students help middle schoolers, and our popular Senior Buddies program, which teams twelfth graders with sixth graders. Our average class size is 15 students, but many sections are smaller, especially in the upper school, where advanced courses expand. These small class sizes and an intimate, nurturing environment in which students develop close relationships with faculty are among Greenhill's education hallmarks. Greenhills creates opportunities for the entire student body to come together and give back to our surrounding communities throughout the year. The Middle School program embraces a grade-level thematic approach to service learning and academics, thoughtfully introducing students to civic responsibility. Students in the Upper School are encouraged to give back through individual projects and contribute as leaders during school-wide activities.
