Furness Primary School aims to provide a safe and positive atmosphere that stimulates a working environment and where children can achieve high standards through a solid foundation of teaching across a creative and broadly balanced curriculum. We endeavor to provide all of our children with the skills needed to develop positive attitudes, where mutual respect, values, and sensitivity are nurtured within a culturally diverse community. The choir and other talented students took part in a Spring music concert organized by Mr. Francis. They performed so well, making their parents very proud. Year 5 and 6 children took part in a Badminton tournament. We welcomed at Furness the NSPCC which is a leading children's charity fighting to end child abuse in the UK, Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man. They help children who have been abused to rebuild their lives, protect those at risk, and find the best ways of preventing abuse from ever happening online and in person. Furness Primary School was opened in 1908 as a council school and officially closed as such, transforming into a Multi-Academy Trust (MAT) linked with Oakington Manor, Wembley in 2016. Furness has originally constructed three stories high but was unfortunately bombed during World War 2 and damaged to the extent that the topmost level could not be saved. However, the building is still able to boast two large stories with mezzanines and a basement the latter was recently transformed into a modern and spacious conference room/after-school club. It has two play areas for the pupils, all equipped with modern safe-play structures for both infants and juniors. Within the premises are spacious classrooms, catering for two form entry, plus extra rooms which have allowed the school to take on three form entry for three cohorts over the past six years. These rooms provide invigorating learning environments. The school also has two performance/ reception/PE halls, a library, several rooms used for focused intervention teaching, an ICT suite, and numerous washroom facilities. At Furness Primary Academy we follow the National Curriculum. We use a banded book approach to reading. This means that we use a variety of different reading scheme books and books which are not within reading schemes. Books are graded by difficulty and labeled by colored groups. Ranging from wordless picture books to full chapter books, they gradually increase in difficulty, length, and technical elements. We also use specialist reading schemes to support pupils with specific reading difficulties. These are often high interest with low reading ages. At Furness Primary we teach phonics using 'Letters and sounds'. We provide daily speaking and listening activities that are well matched to children’s developing abilities and interests, drawing upon observations and assessments to plan for progression. Within our lower age groups, we have dedicated daily phonic teaching sessions so that children become familiar with their letters and sounds. Safer Internet Day is celebrated globally in February each year to promote the safe and positive use of digital technology for children and young people and inspire a national conversation. The theme this year is "create, connect and share respect: a safer internet begins with you." At Furness, we are dedicating the safer use of the internet. All computing lessons will emphasize the importance of being safe online. E-safety is part of the computing curriculum but offers the opportunity to highlight positive uses of technology and to explore the role we all play in helping to create a better and safer online community. We believe that every young person should have the chance for a positive future. Together we can encourage children to make wise life choices: to stay in school, stay out of gangs and knife crime, and work hard to realize their incredible potential. At the end of each school term, students at Furness have the chance to take part in sports tournaments. This is an excellent way to consolidate skills learned throughout the term, and a great opportunity to develop healthy competitions across the school with a very strong PE and PSHE theme but also to reward children for their hard work and to challenge all the talent we have in school. To enter, teams had to mix players from different year groups which added more cooperation between students. All children in the RED house had the chance to take part in a Bench ball tournament in the last week of the term as a reward for collecting the most points. View full school
