The Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin was founded in 1950 as the “Deutsche Hochschule für Musik” (German Academy for Music). The School provides training to circa 500 students at two attractive locations at the heart of Berlin – in direct proximity to the Konzerthaus Berlin at Gendarmenmarkt, as well as in the Neuer Marstall on Schloßplatz, across from the Humboldt Forum, currently under construction. Faculty members – among them Nicolas Altstaedt, Kolja Blacher, Claudio Bohórquez, Hanspeter Kyburz, Marie-Luise Neunecker, Thomas Quasthoff, Christine Schäfer, Julia Varady, Antje Weithaas, and Tabea Zimmermann – contribute to the school's outstanding international reputation, as well as its strong appeal for young musicians around the world. Two thirds of the student body comes from abroad. Professor Robert Ehrlich has served as Rector of the Hanns Eisler School since October 1, 2015 The subjects' spectrum revolves around the outside art music and encompasses voice, piano, string instruments, woodwind, brass instruments, conducting, music theater direction, musicology, and composition. Components of the schools edschool'sal profile include a trio of institutes operated in conjunction with the Universität der Künste/the University of the Arts Berlin: the Jazz Institute Berlin, klangzeitort: the Institute for New Music, and the Kurt Singer Institute for Music Physiology and Musicians' Health, along with a preparatory music school, the Musikgymnasium Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach Berlin. The School's ensembles, among them the Symphony Orchestra and the Echo Ensemble, perform at the highest artistic levels. Through masterclasses and workshops, students hone their musical skills by working directly with leading artistic personalities – among those who have worked with students at the School in such settings have been Midori, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Daniel Barenboim, Zubin Mehta, Kent Nagano, Seiji Ozawa, Thomas Quasthoff, Sir Simon Rattle, and Christian Thielemann. At nearly 300 public events annually, the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin provides insights into its students' artistic development. Concerts, opera projects, lecture evenings, and masterclasses occur on school premises and at several additional attractive venues throughout the German capital. As a vital link within the network of renowned cultural institutions found in the German Federal Republic's capital, the School works closely with the excellent Berlin orchestras, the city's three opera houses, and several other institutions of various sizes and types. The experience of performing publicly on concert and theater stages is a fundamental aspect of training at the Hanns Eisler School. Students accumulate necessary experience in the professional music business during their studies and establish contacts capable of furthering their subsequent careers. Claudio Abbado †, Daniel Barenboim, Sir Simon Rattle, and Wolfgang Rihm are among those who have supported or are currently supporting the School's artistic and educational aims by serving in the function of Honorary Senators. Among the members of the University Board – an external representative body composed of personalities from culture, business, and scholarship and situated at the interface between the School, the government, and the wider society – are Bernd Wieczorek, Petra Mai-Hartung, Lothar Zagrosek, with Prof. Antje Weithaas, who represents the faculty. The Society of Friends and Patrons of the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin promotes our students' interests and has also established the artists' agency "Eisleriana. " Among the school's alumni are personalities such as Jochen Kowalski, Olga Peretyatko, Anna Prohaska, Roman Trekel (voice) Georg Katzer, Siegfried Matthus, Friedrich Schenker (composition) Vladimir Jurowski, Lahav Shani, Ernst Stoy, Sebastian Weigle, Kahchun Wong, Feng Yu (conducting) Jenny Erpenbeck, Tatjana Gürbaca, Peter Konwitschny, Christine Mielitz, Vera Nemirova (direction) Isabelle Faust (violin) Antoine Tamestit (viola) Nicolas Altstaedt, Claudio Bohórquez, Sol Gabetta, Danjulo Ishizaka, Johannes Moser (cello) Martin Helmchen (piano), as well as in the jazz realm, Volker Schlott and Rolf von Nordenskjöld (saxophone). The library at Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin is located on the 3rd floor of the main building (Charlottenstr. 55) and is open to all students, teachers, and other school staff. It holds approximately 14 400 books, 57 000 scores, and 4100 CDs/Videos. Media can be researched online and reserved through the Online Catalogue. The Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin awards the Deutschlandstipendium to students of all nationalities and all subject areas who show exceptional promise under their outstanding achievements and social commitment. Through a Deutschlandstipendium, you will provide significant material assistance to an outstanding young musical talent, allowing him/her to focus entirely on his/her studies. The Deutschlandstipendium is based on mixed financing: one half of each stipend is financed through private donations, while the German Federal Republic covers the other half. Therefore, your contribution of €1800 means a total payment of €3600 for a one-year scholarship. Beginning in the winter semester, each student receives €300 monthly for 12 months. When you decide to sponsor a Deutschlandstipendium, you enjoy the prerogative of earmarking the award, i.e., for a specific artistic subject. We are also grateful for donations in amounts lower than the subsidy amount of €1800: these flow into a sponsorship pool through which contributions are bundled and used to cover additional stipends. Your gift can also be utilized for tax purposes (you will receive a donation receipt toward the end of the year). As a sponsor, you will be invited to official events such as the Deutschlandstipendium Awards Ceremony and an exclusive annual concert given by scholarship holders – and will hence enjoy opportunities to become acquainted with stipend holders, instructors, and the School's president.
