Allen Edwards Primary School is a two-form entry school based in the heart of Stockwell which takes children from Nursery to Year 6. We are an inclusive school that values the contributions made by each child and their family and are proud of the cultural and linguistic diversity of our school and its community. We have a specialist speech and language resource base which supports pupils through a variety of specialist teaching. At Allen Edwards, we offer children a creative curriculum that is engaging and stimulating and encourages children to want to learn. English and Maths feature highly on our curriculum. Core quality texts or strong links with themes are used to stimulate purposeful writing opportunities. We take full advantage of being so close to central London and offer a wide variety of trips and enrichment opportunities, as well as inviting several visitors to our school throughout the academic year. We have specialist music teachers in the school and offer a wide variety of music opportunities both within curriculum time and through lunchtime and after-school clubs. Physical Education is high on the school’s agenda and this year we have two specialist PE coaches who offer a minimum of two hours of PE provision within the school curriculum. A variety of lunchtime and after-school clubs provided by our specialist coaches takes place throughout the school week. Our Nursery and Reception children are also taught by our specialist coaches in small groups, as we believe developing these skills at an early age will encourage children to enjoy a healthy lifestyle. We pride ourselves on the development of our pupil’s social and emotional skills by fostering caring and thoughtful attitudes, respect for others, and self-confidence. The development of pupil's spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development is at the heart of our curriculum and is reflected in our values and ethos. We aim to ensure we are providing our pupils with the skills required to live in modern Britain as responsible citizens. The atmosphere at Allen Edwards is relaxed and welcoming and the children show great pride in their school. The school has links with many therapeutic services and can offer pupils and families a variety of therapeutic services including drama and family therapy. Allen Edwards has a strong collaborative partnership with three local primary schools and a secondary academy. We work together on several projects around teaching and learning to offer our children a wider variety of enrichment opportunities. At Allen Edwards, we aim to provide the highest standards of education in an inclusive environment, through effective teaching and learning. We believe that learning should be purposeful, exciting, and challenging and we aim to achieve this through a curriculum that is broad, balanced, and relevant. Our curriculum is underpinned by 5 key drivers which we believe are the steps needed for our children to become successful and independent learners. These key drivers are embedded in our school aims and underpin our work as a school and in the community that we serve. The promotion of pupil’s spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development is at the heart of our school curriculum and demonstrated in our school ethos and values of honesty, respect, tolerance, kindness, and trust. We aim to develop confident learners who take ownership of their learning, are proud of their achievements, are well prepared for life in Modern Britain, and understand the possibilities ahead of them. Through positive attitudes and partnerships, we endeavor to develop the whole child, meeting individual needs in a safe and secure environment. We are a community of learners and we will work together to maintain a safe and stimulating learning environment, develop an awareness of wider global issues and through our curriculum make strong links with our local and wider communities. We aim to promote resourcefulness in our learners through encouraging resilience, risk-taking, and problem-solving skills, developing learners' confidence, and ensuring that kindness, respect, and tolerance is shown towards others. Collaboration and positive partnerships with individual children, the whole class, our colleagues, governors, parents, and the wider community will lead to effective teaching and learning, high standards, and successful learning. Ysgol O. M. Edwards is part of the Fair Trade campaign. The objective is to teach pupils that producers – wherever they may be – deserve a fair price for their produce. This is done through: Emphasizing the importance of local produce – visits to shops in Bala Emphasizing that Fair Trade produce can be found in shops and that buying these ensure better living conditions for producers Using Fair Trade produce at the school when we can, e.g. fruits in the morning, cooking in classes with pupils, and inviting guest speakers to the school Drawing the attention of parents and the local community to Fair Trade produce. The school’s Fair Trade notice board. The school was awarded the Eco-School green flag in the summer of 2010. Ysgol O. M. Edwards stresses the need to be eco-friendly. This involves recycling paper, resources, clothing, stamps, producing compost from kitchen waste, teaching pupils to grow their garden produce, growing fruit and vegetables in a greenhouse, re-using printer cartridges, collecting litter, monitoring the use of water, electricity, and oil. Ysgol O. M. Edwards is part of the Gwynedd Healthy Schools Scheme. The principal objectives of the scheme are to develop a positive whole-school attitude towards food and nutrition, ensuring that healthy eating is promoted, develop the school as a workplace that promotes the social, physical, and emotional health of every member of staff, reinforce self-worth and promote the mental health of all pupils, display a commitment to improving the school environment, to promote the health and well-being of the entire school community, ensure long-term schemes that provide every pupil with an opportunity to participate in physical activities regularly.
