Eastbrook School enables all young people to develop and follow their ambition with confidence. Eastbrook School is the only secondary school in Barking and Dagenham that has extensive additional specialist provision for students with speech, language, and communication needs. We have a dedicated team who believe that every child is entitled to the best possible education and we provide a supportive environment to enable each student to feel valued and confident so that they can reach their full potential. Pupils attending the additional resource provisions are fully included in the school. They understand how to keep themselves safe and they feel safe in school. Their good behavior helps them to learn well and also to relate appropriately to teachers and other pupils’. Our specialist staff works closely with the Speech and Language Therapists, Educational psychologists, Advisory Teachers, parents, and students to design each student’s program. Our students thoroughly enjoy the facilities and help offered by ARP which has a big impact on their personal development and academic progress. Eastbrook School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all our students and we expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. This means that we have a comprehensive Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy and strong procedures in place which we refer to in our prospectus and here on our website. All staff (including supply staff, volunteers, and governors) ensure that they are aware of these procedures. Parents and carers are encouraged to read the Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy which can be found alongside all school policies. We are committed to working in partnership and share relevant information with other agencies when there are concerns about a child’s welfare. We will ensure that our concerns about our students are discussed with parents/carers first unless we have reason to believe that such a move would be contrary to their welfare. Our Designated Safeguarding Officer is Cherelle Hinds, who works closely with the Headteacher, Valerie Dennis, and the Designated Governor for Safeguarding, Gill Ellis. The Access Centre will work to ensure that the education learners receive is tailored to meet their individual needs and designed to give them the skills to improve their life chances. The ethos and atmosphere underpin the agreed aims of the school. Teachers provide a broad and balanced curriculum, which will develop the skills, concepts, and knowledge necessary for future learning. All staff, including support staff, work to remove barriers to learning and support the pastoral needs of learners. Eastbrook School subscribes to the ‘Accelerated reader reading scheme from Renaissance Learning.ALL students are required to read for homework, 30 minutes every evening. Pupils are tested regularly online and guided towards the appropriate level of reading for each individual. Part of the ‘reading homework’ requires them to complete an online quiz by the 1st of each month. The Eastbrook SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability) Department views all students with special educational needs and/or disabilities as individuals. It is the responsibility of the Inclusive Learning Team to ensure that the statutory support requirements of individual students are met and that all staff can share the responsibility for developing styles of teaching and learning which benefit all students, ensuring success within the National Curriculum and nationally accredited qualifications at the appropriate level. The SEND Department is located in the main school to which Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) and Teaching Assistants (TA’s) are based in this area, which is a focal point for students and staff. TAs work with individuals and groups of students with the highest levels of SEND and in subjects that reflect their experience and qualifications. These students are allocated to a TA/keyworker. All students with SEND are monitored by the SENCO to track progress and provision. Students are encouraged to “drop-in” to tell staff about successes, as well as concerns or queries about homework. Dealing with an issue quickly avoids an escalation of anxiety or frustration. Students are encouraged to communicate with each other and with students from other year groups. The opportunity to chat with peers and staff provides time for promoting social skills and interaction. Students can also catch up with homework, use the computers or play chess and other games. In Speech, Language, and Communication (SLCN) Provision – we have a dedicated team, providing specialist teaching and therapy which addresses each student’s speech and language delay and disorder.
