With approximately 23 000 students, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) is the first choice for higher education in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). It is located in the beautiful cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg (PMB). As a University of Technology, it prioritizes teaching and learning by ensuring its academic staff possesses the highest possible qualification that they can get. The Durban University of Technology results from the merger in April 2002 of two prestigious technikons, ML Sultan and Technikon Natal. It was named the Durban Institute of Technology and later became the Durban University of Technology in line with the rest of the technical universities. DUT, a member of the International Association of Universities, is a multi-campus university of technology at the cutting edge of higher education, specialized training, and research. The University aspires to be a “preferred university for developing leadership in technology and productive citizenship” and “making knowledge useful.” As a butterfly develops from a pupa, so have the students at our institution. From the moment they register as green freshers to their capping at the hallowed graduation ceremony, our students undergo an intellectual evolution. The Durban University of Technology Gallery is located in Durban, on the Steve Biko Campus in the Cecil Renaud Theatre above the Library. It is a space dedicated to the displaying of all visual arts. It serves as a support department for the Art and Design Department in the Faculty of Arts. The gallery’s main objective is to educate, research, and serve the art community using visual art as its primary tool. The DUT Gallery is the University’s cultural base dedicated to collecting, documenting, and conserving art. Since 1982 the gallery has collected current and historical art that includes ancient and modern artifacts. The University’s collection includes anonymous carvings, clay pots, beadwork, wooden and bronze sculptures, contemporary paintings, mixed media, and art installations. The collection has become a historical reference that encompasses cultural diversity while encouraging continuity in research, teaching, and promoting the visual arts within the student body and society at large. The collection continues to grow through donations and purchases that have relevance to current commentary. View full university
