Dollis is a diverse and vibrant multicultural 3 form entry Junior school located in Mill Hill, North West London. We value and celebrate the rich linguistic and cultural diversity in our school and the local community. Our ethos is to create a learning environment where every child recognizes that they have many talents and strengths but also to be reflective and identify areas they need to work on and improve. We support our pupils through their learning journey by encouraging a ‘can-do attitude, having high aspirations, high expectations, and showing that mistakes are always a learning opportunity. We believe that every child can achieve great things and it is our role, working closely with our families, to ensure that every child is the best they can be. In our school, we are committed to the highest standards of teaching and learning achieved through a combination of challenge, support, encouragement, and praise. We aim high to help our children be successful individuals inside and outside of school. Alongside learning, we pride ourselves on our values-based approach which has created a school that is nurturing, positive, and always welcoming. Our core values of 'respect, honesty, and kindness' underpin everything we do with relationships built and developed on mutual respect. Our school community is encouraged to think about these and our 19 other values when making choices and reflecting upon the choices we have made. We have a supportive pastoral approach that is designed to help pupils develop a strong sense of responsibility for themselves, their peers, and the wider world. We are fortunate to have a dynamic, dedicated, and passionate team of teachers and support staff who provide a stimulating, engaging, and creative curriculum. As well as teaching the National Curriculum requirements, through our wider horizons sessions we can broaden our children’s skills and life experiences. We enjoy working closely with our families and recognize the importance of establishing strong home/school partnerships. We are continually looking for ways to enhance these relationships and encourage our families to take on an active role in our school. We recognize that we need to work together to help each child reach their potential. We are a busy and friendly school with lots going on. Our aim is for our children to be happy, confident, motivated, and independent learners and we support them in every way we can to achieve their very best. The Dollis Infant School has stated the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.” At Dollis Infant School these values are reinforced regularly by following our values-based approach to the curriculum. Our community has chosen six values that the children learn about and discuss throughout the year and our parents and staff model and promote those values in the children’s everyday lives. We believe that for children to make good progress with their learning they need support from home as well as at school. We aim to develop a partnership with all our parents and carers to help our children achieve their very best. At Dollis Infant School we are working together to embed a values-based approach into all aspects of our ethos and curriculum. At Dollis Infant School we aim to help children build on their natural enthusiasm for movement. We teach children how to acquire and develop their skills, select and apply them in a variety of situations and evaluate and improve their performance. We strongly believe that developing their physical skills will help them to achieve in all other areas of the curriculum. Our School Council comprises two elected members from each class. The members of the School Council meet regularly with Mr. Wingrove to discuss school issues. The Council members often seek views from the children in their classes which they represent at the meetings and feedback discussions and decisions afterward. All our parents and carers are members of the Friends of Dollis Parent and Carer Association which meets every half term. Parents and carers are encouraged to raise and discuss issues that affect the school and we listen carefully to the views and opinions raised. Our School Behaviour Policy is clear that all our children are expected to contribute and co-operate, taking into account the views of others. We have high expectations of behavior in our school which is consistently reinforced. Children are taught the value of, and reasons for, our expectations, and they understand that the rules are there to protect us, that everyone has a responsibility and that there are consequences when rules are broken. Mutual respect is at the heart of our values. Children learn that their behaviors affect their rights and those of others and all members of the school community are encouraged to treat each other with respect. We are extremely lucky at Dollis Infant School to have families from a huge variety of racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds. We aim to enhance our children’s understanding of different faiths and beliefs by participating in a range of celebrations throughout the year. Children have the opportunity to dress up in their traditional clothes and try different foods from other cultures and we encourage parents/carers to participate and support our multicultural events. We celebrate Black History week every October. The school supports a variety of local and national charities each year and plans fundraising activities to support those charities, for example, Homeless Action in Barnet, NSPCC, and Children in Need. Our children are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school, we educate and provide boundaries for young children to make choices safely through our provision of a safe environment and empowering teaching.
