We are proud of our academic results and are always striving for improvement but also take care to nurture and stimulate our children – we want every child to leave Derwentwater Primary School with happy memories of their early education as well as the skills they need to succeed in life. Parents and carers' active participation in this process is essential and so we place an emphasis on working in partnership with parents through, for example, curriculum workshops, special need reviews, coffee mornings, stay and play sessions for Early Years, and volunteer programs. We embed these attributes and skills within our day-to-day school life as we feel that they are essential life skills. For early reading, we follow a synthetic phonics scheme called ‘Read, Write Inc.’ This is taught within a text-rich environment where children are encouraged to read for pleasure. Children in Reception and Year 1 have a daily phonics lesson (of varying lengths), completing all the phases before continuing with English lessons further up the school. Early mathematics is taught through the use of the national curriculum, which focuses on numbers, shapes, and problem-solving. We use concrete apparatus to help with visual learning. Mathematics provides students with a powerful set of tools to understand the world. At Derwentwater Primary School, we aim to provide all students with a high-quality mathematics education that allows them to make connections between maths in the classroom and maths in everyday life. In a typical week, there are six, one hour, maths lessons. These lessons teach students: mathematical fluency, reasoning skills, and how to apply formal methods when problem-solving. Each lesson has a clear learning objective that has been taken from the National Curriculum as well as clear steps for success. Lessons are usually structured to include: Mental starter, teacher input/modeling, independent or group work to complete the set activity, and finally a plenary. Through differentiation, all students, regardless of ability, are catered for. Some examples of differentiation in a typical maths lesson are ability-based groups, the use of equipment, questioning, and then modifying the set task.
