Delbarton School is founded on the 1500-year tradition of Benedictine learning, which, in the Catholic liberal arts tradition, seeks to develop the whole person, both as an individual creature of mind, body, and spirit a member of a community. Delbarton School is an independent Benedictine Catholic college preparatory school guided by the Benedictine monks of St. Mary's Abbey and their lay colleagues. Delbarton is rooted in the Catholic and particularly Benedictine monastic traditions of a vital liberal arts education. The Delbarton community comprises a faculty of eighty-five men and women and approximately five hundred and ninety young men. Delbarton welcomes individuals of every race, religion, and national and ethnic origin who wish to contribute to the Delbarton community and to be nourished by it. Delbarton seeks to enroll young men of good character who have demonstrated scholastic achievement and additional growth capacity. In turn, the faculty strives to support each young man's efforts toward intellectual development and reinforce his commitment to building a Christian community of mutually accountable persons. Delbarton's faculty encourages each young man to become an independent seeker and creator of knowledge. Each young man must assume responsibility for gaining both knowledge and judgment, which will strengthen his faith, his membership in the life of Delbarton, and his contribution to broader society. While Delbarton offers much, it also seeks young men who are willing to give much. Delbarton School, an independent Roman Catholic learning community guided by the Benedictine monks of St. Mary's Abbey with their lay colleagues, welcomes diverse young men and challenges them to pursue excellence, to build character, and to develop leadership through service, by educating the whole person: mind, body, and spirit. In Succisa Virescit: "Once cut down, one will grow back stronger." That here, we belong. Delbarton School seeks to foster a profound and lifelong love of learning in our students. Delbarton's program challenges young men to know themselves and extend their capacities for their benefit and the benefit of the community. Delbarton School offers a traditional college-preparatory liberal arts curriculum to help the young man develop the knowledge, skills, integrity, and sensitivity that distinguishes a self-renewing educated person. The Delbarton student body comes from over eight counties and 60 towns, representing various talents and backgrounds. Students are encouraged to grow through challenges, to take risks by broadening their capacities of body, mind, and spirit. Each boy is expected to assume responsibility for gaining both knowledge and judgment, which will strengthen his faith, his participation in the life of the School, and his contribution to the broader society. In short, while Delbarton students receive much from our School, they are also expected to give much. The Delbarton School motto Succisa Virescit* is translated "Cut down, it grows up strong again" and was chosen to convey the value and importance of perseverance. Succisa Virescit is also the ancient motto of Montecassino, the celebrated monastery where St. Benedict wrote his Rule. This venerable abbey, destroyed by the Lombards in 580, rebuilt by Abbot Petronaux, and destroyed again by the Saracens in 884, has a constant history of destruction even up to our own time when the Allies obliterated it in World War II.
