Craigmount High School draws its students mainly from the areas served by the following primary schools: Corstorphine, East Craigs, Fox Covert, Hillwood, and Roseburn, though a significant number of children ‘opt in’ from other schools. The school is co-educational and nondenominational and welcomes students from any social, ethnic, or religious background. Craigmount High School was rebuilt in 2004 on part of the original site to provide a new three-story building with integral sports and community facilities. The school building successfully provides for the demands of both present and future teaching and learning needs. The design provides a single main entrance that opens into a social space giving a welcoming aspect for students, teachers, and visitors. The school roll is approximately 1150 and with around 100 teaching staff and 35 support staff working together to provide challenging and engaging learning experiences in and outside of the classroom. This school is an integral part of the community and the support we receive from parents, businesses and local groups helps us to encourage all students to learn effectively and to enjoy a relevant, challenging, and stimulating education. Our vision is for all children and young people in Edinburgh to enjoy their childhood and fulfill their potential. We believe that children and young people do best when they can live safely and happily within their own families with the right kind of support as needed and they attend first-class, inclusive schools, and early years settings that meet their needs. Students at Craigmount are engaging in a new set of experiences and outcomes as laid down by the Curriculum. We plan to learn experiences that provide depth, challenge, and opportunities for students to apply their knowledge and skills in real-life contexts. Active learning approaches mean that our students are encouraged to be critically aware of what they are learning, how well they are doing, and what they need to do to get better. A whole range of students are referred to the Support for Learning Department by subject teachers, student support staff, parents, or students may refer themselves. Throughout the Broad General Education, emphasis is put on improving skills for lifelong learning and following specific reading and spelling programs. The Inclusion Resource supports up to five students every year who have significant additional support needs, arising from moderate learning difficulties and/or language communication difficulties. These students are supported to participate fully in school life. We provide individualized planning for each learner, a speech and language therapist who supports staff in meeting learning needs, partnership working with a host of agencies, and individually planned transition arrangements post-school. The Craigmount Sports Club was initiated to encourage pupils to participate in after-school sporting activities. On receipt of an application and Parental consent form, each ‘club’ member receives a unique numbered plastic membership card, which will in return provide them with access to any activity.
