Coleford Junior School is a mainstream academy. The school is purpose-built and designed to integrate up to thirteen physically disabled pupils. We are fortunate to be on the edge of Ruislip Woods in a beautiful setting with an extensive field, playground, and nature areas. We provide a secure, happy, and stimulating community where children and adults can grow and develop learning in partnership. We aim for and encourage high standards in both personal and academic achievement, working within the framework of a challenging and creative curriculum. Coleford Junior School is a purpose-built school that is designed to integrate up to thirteen physically disabled pupils. We are extremely fortunate to have a very beautiful setting. In addition to our playgrounds, we have extensive fields and are on the edge of Ruislip Woods. We have eleven designated classrooms. We also have extra teaching rooms, a food technology room, an ICT room, a well-stocked library, Conference Room, Parents’ Room, hydrotherapy pool, a beautiful pond area, a multi-purpose hall, and several resources/activity areas. Children transferring from Coleford Infant School are usually guaranteed a place in year three. This is exercised during the admissions procedure. Coleford Junior School’s curriculum has been developed about the National Curriculum, Hillingdon Guidelines, and our philosophy. We encourage independent learners who are excited and challenged by the learning opportunities given to them. Over an academic year, the children’s learning will be enhanced by special curriculum days or theme weeks. Examples of these include Best of British Arts Week, Natural World Arts Week, and Maths and Science Weeks. The children all participate in a wide range of creative and group learning experiences, which they love and which become a highlight of their time in Junior School. We run a wide range of extracurricular clubs, before school, after school, and at lunchtime. You can gain a place on these via the parent logon on Fronter. Learning from the local and wider environment is a very important part of life at Coleford Junior School. All year groups will go on an average of at least one trip per term and we also welcome numerous visitors into school to enhance the children’s learning. In line with the law and our charging policy, we request voluntary contributions for these trips. Coleford Junior School has a very special, caring atmosphere in which everyone is appreciated for his or her own merits. All children have access to the Coleford Junior School Curriculum. Our school closely follows the SEN Code of Practice and we are proud to say, is one of a very few schools which have been awarded the coveted Inclusion Quality Mark four times, holding it since 2006. We want all children to achieve their potential, including those with special needs. At Coleford Junior School we have the advantage of extra resources so that children with physical disabilities can learn alongside able-bodied children. This means that we have extra staff and extra equipment. Physiotherapists and occupational therapists, provided by the local health authority, are based at the school. We also have access to speech and language therapists. There are a sensory room, physiotherapy suite, and hydrotherapy pool on site. We have a 17- seat minibus with a tail-lift for wheelchairs. Coleford Infant School is a mainstream school with the privilege of additional funds to support approximately 10 children with physical disabilities. We have 3 classes in each year group and 70 children in our nursery. We believe that all children can achieve well and we work closely with parents to set and achieve high expectations for our children. There is an emphasis on active learning in the classrooms and making lessons fun. Children are encouraged to “have a go” and become independent as well as motivated learners. Individual pupil targets are regularly shared with parents and children’s progress is closely monitored. The school environment is well maintained, safe, exciting, and vibrant. The playground has many exciting features including Spoon Island, Happy Hills, and the Magical Theatre. Recently we have extended the school hall and installed theatre lighting to support sports, drama and special events. We are proud of our school and our children. Our Curriculum is carefully planned alongside the National Curriculum and Early Years Foundation Stage. We use a topic-based approach to ensure that the curriculum is exciting, fun, and engaging for all our children. In English, we use the Read Write Inc Programme to teach phonics, reading, and writing. In Maths we use the ‘Mastery’ approach to ensure all children can develop their maths skills at a deeper level. Our Reading materials which we use for guided reading as well as home readers include a wealth of engaging and stimulating books from a range of publishers including Collins Big Cats, Rigby Star, and Ginn Lighthouse. All children have access to the National Curriculum and our school follows closely the SEN Code of Practice published by the DFE. We want all children to achieve their best including those with special needs. Most of the extra support children are given takes place within the classroom, although there are occasions when it is more appropriate to withdraw children to another room. We always consult with parents about any extra support that is given. Coleford Infant School is privileged to have a Specialist Resource Provision for children in Hillingdon who have a physical disability. Generally, we can admit between 10 and 12 children across the school from nursery to Year 2. Children need an Education Health Care Plan before they can have access to the specialist resources which include: support from trained teaching assistants, specialist equipment e.g. standing frames, specialist seating, etc, advice and support from physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, and the school inclusion manager. All of our children with physical disabilities are fully integrated into the classes. Children work and play together. We believe that this mix of specialist support in a mainstream school gives young children a great start to their school career.
