Begun in 1914, Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, WA, offers Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in the performing and visual arts and a Bachelor of Music degree, multiple public programs, and extension courses. The college'scollege's founder Nellie Cornish, and the many teaching artists who have followed her, believed in education through exposure to all the arts. This approach continues to inform the college'scollege's curriculum and community involvement today. Our holistic approach to education promotes experimentation, discovery, and innovation, giving artists the creative intelligence they need to thrive in their disciplines and beyond. Cornish is accredited by the Northwest Commission of Colleges and Universities and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. The mission of Cornish College of the Arts is to provide students aspiring to become practicing artists with an educational program of the highest possible quality, in an environment that nurtures creativity and intellectual curiosity while preparing them to contribute to social innovators. Cornish realizes this mission by offering baccalaureate studies in the performing and visual arts and serving as a focal point in the community for public presentation, artistic criticism, participation, and discussion. When The Cornish School opened its doors in 1914, it resulted from the tenacious and inspired efforts of a singular woman -- Nellie Centennial Cornish. The College's commitment to education for a sustainable future and its holistic and innovative approach to student development is strongly aligned with my educational philosophy. As a teacher, I have had the privilege of working with young people to develop their skills in English or their love of literature and serve and engage them and support their growth as individuals and as citizens. This is a fantastic time to be working with young people in education as we reframe schools' experience in response to a rapidly changing world. The story of the foundation of Cornish College in 2012 is a community effort, persistence, courage, and vision. Today, this school thrives because of the community's deep belief in our educational philosophy of preparing students for life. Our students are learning about how they can make a difference today and as adults. Our vision of sustainable living is all-encompassing and includes personal, socio-cultural, urban/technological, and environmental dimensions. This is a vibrant school community with a commitment to excellence in teaching and learning. We recognize the importance of academic rigor, creativity, and developing strong foundation skills for learning. The Cornish College educational philosophy is based around a vision for the whole community of the sustainable living.
