Coppice Primary School is part of The London Borough of Redbridge. It is a two-form entry school, admitting 60 children each year with a nursery attached. In Year 5 we currently have 90 children. Our school is an inspiring place to be in! We are fortunate enough to be able to boast that we are a semi-rural school in an urban setting. We are situated on Manford Way and enjoy extensive grounds as well as easy access on foot to the amazing Hainault Forest including nature reserve and lake. We work hard to ensure that this exciting outdoor location plays an important part in our learning. In addition to the amazing location in which our school is set, we can offer our pupils extraordinary resources to support their learning. We have a purpose-built IT suite, a specialist Art Studio, a Science Laboratory, a Library, and a Music Room enabling us to provide high-quality specialist lessons and a broad, exciting, and motivating curriculum. Coppice Primary School, a vibrant, happy, creative learning community we aim to provide a cooperative learning community where all achievements are celebrated and valued. Through creativity, innovation, effective communication technologies, and a cross-curricular approach to learning, our staff facilitate and engage learning, harness children’s talents, and interests, and enable children to leave Coppice as responsible citizens of the world and lifelong learners and thinkers. Our school motto 'aspire, believe, achieve' is fundamental in all that we do. We want Coppice to be a school that aspires to achieve in every way: academically, personally, and socially. Children are at the center of everything we do at Coppice. We have high expectations for every one of the children within our care irrespective of their ability or background. All our children are expected to work hard and challenge themselves to be the very best that they can be. We intend to ensure that our children develop a love for learning that will remain with them throughout their life. To this end, we make learning fun wherever possible. We encourage our children to understand that it is alright to get things wrong as making mistakes is an important part of the learning process. Praise and positive encouragement are key elements of our approach as we believe that children with high self-esteem and a ‘can do’ approach to learning achieve more. High standards of behavior are also a key factor to life at Coppice. The Coppice Code, drawn from the British Values of Respect, Tolerance, Democracy, Rule of Law, and Individual Liberty are understood by all and, as a result, children’s behavior is excellent. We place a strong emphasis on personal responsibility and use praise and positive encouragement to help each child to be able to ‘make the right decisions for themselves. Coppice is a successful school where all those connected with it work together for the benefit of the children who attend. Our pupils are encouraged to be themselves, be independent learners, and make the most of all the opportunities that are available to them. Whilst here, they learn in a caring and nurturing environment and take part in a variety of curricular and extracurricular activities. Children are encouraged to consider the world and community around them and make responsible decisions that will impact positively others. We moved into our new premises in September 2008 and children take great pride and care of the facilities that we have and that we continue to add to. We believe that it is our responsibility to enable children to become independent and confident. Our aim is that all pupils at Coppice Primary school develop the skills necessary to become lifelong learners. They will learn to value themselves and others. They will be inspired and enthused by the challenges we present to them and feel secure and supported enough to try new and difficult experiences. School should be fun not about acquiring information for the sake of it but about opening doors and visualizing new possibilities. We believe that pupils at Coppice have the right to an education that is inclusive and allows all to realize their potential. In partnership with parents, we can make school a happy and enjoyable experience. Pupils should feel safe, challenged, and able to meet that challenge. School should provide access to a broad and balanced curriculum, both academic and social. Pupils should experience new and varied challenges and look to meet them with the support of their peers. At Coppice, we aim to give all of our children a broad and balanced curriculum. We currently follow the National Curriculum to form the basis of our whole school curriculum. From that, we then plan a creative curriculum to deliver each aspect in a personalized and engaging way. This often means subjects are taught through a theme, where meaningful cross-curricular links are made. Themes are varied to excite and inspire, drawing where possible from the children's interests. We believe that children learn best through a wide variety of experiences so when planning teachers look for ways to incorporate: practical hands-on activities, visitors, the outdoor environment, visits, the local community, meaningful end products, and a range of technology. The Religious Education curriculum is taken from the Birmingham Agreed Syllabus. Reception classes follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework focusing on the seven areas of learning and development. These include communication and language, physical development, personal, social, and emotional development, literacy, mathematics, understanding the world, and expressive arts and design. At Coppice, we follow the Government document 'Letters and Sounds' to teach phonics. This teaching is then supported by a wide range of resources. The children's reading skills are further developed through three reading schemes (Phonics Bug, Ginn, and Rigby Star) which allow a breadth of experience. Children also have access to a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction books, in the school libraries, to help foster independent choice and a love of reading. Coppice Primary School has a longstanding reputation for high academic standards and the development of the whole child. Visitors invariably comment on the caring ethos of the school - a balance between hard work and enjoyment. Our children prepare for the world in which they live and work. We believe they need to be lifelong learners, adapt quickly to new situations, work effectively with other people and think creatively.
